I was thinking of installing a set of steel main's and girdle.

In the machining process when you align hone the main's
should you have both the heads on the motor, or also
have the girdle installed at the same time?

i was reading the write up of Merkel's engines build up
in High Tiech magazine. It did not say anything about it?

Thanks all

I recently talked with the guys up here who make the girdle in Canada
Here's what I got:
Take a lick off of the pan rails to make them flat and true to the crank center line.
The caps should be .004" higher or proud of the pan rails for preload.
When you do the line bore and hone,be sure the caps and girdle are installed and torqued to proper spec.
As to installing the heads,I don't feel it's necessary but if you want to do it,be sure:
The block is decked flat and true to the crank center line.
The heads are flat and true[clean 'em up]
Torque them on using the head gasket brand and style you intend to use for final operation.
Use the fasteners you want to use for final assembly with liquid teflon thread sealer for lubricant[this is important to simulate the proper load of the bolts].
If you really want to simulate the loads of the heads, install the intake as well with gaskets.
Basically, you're assembling the engine in it's final configuration to hopefully simulate all the loads you possibly can[short of raising the engine temps and simulating the engine mount loads and trans loading,etc.].
Who'd you buy the girdle from?
Was it the guys from Cambridge?
Have you talked to them?
That's about all I can offer.Hope that helps a bit.:)

Girdles an caps

Any boby got an opinion (from experience) on the Evans (ERP) girdle and steel caps.. thats the guys from Cambridge Ont. Can??

The girdle/cap route is sounding a lot easier and less $$'s than trying to find a forged crank and cap combo!!

Mine are RJC from modern muscle but the ones from Cambridge are the same thing..so I've heard.

Hi all. My main caps are 4340, which is a very tough toolsteel. The girdles are mild steel and are similar to the RJC girdle.

Radius Kid....Thanks... good answers!!

I've seen his work and it's excellent.
Perhaps a phone # for the guys?
I'll have to talk to you about a improved C-clip eliminator idea I've got[don't like the leaks].
Come on down for a coffee again some time.I enjoyed the conversation, but we barely scratched the surface.
Sorry about that FUBAR[small brainfart].

Our (ERP) number is (519) 740-5055. Ask for Bruce or myself.

We have been trying to get over for a little BUICK talk, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
