I am an electrical engineer at a manufacturing company that makes fairly complicated automated spreading and cutting equipment.

A customer called with a problem with a very old machine at a location 3.5 hrs away. I normally only do real problem or emergency service calls. I drove down to take a look last thurs and found I needed to rewire a portion of the machine that would take about 2 days. I needed special tools, harness and plugs so I said I would prep them up and return this wed.

Early this week I asked the head of Manufacturing if I could take one of the electrical shop guys (union) to help rewire the machine since he is somewhat familiar with it and 2 of us could do it in a day instead of me spending the night and another day down there. Manufacturing guy said it was fine with him but could not make him go. Me and the shop guy get along good so he agreed to go with me.

Tuesday afternoon, the head of manufacturing comes down to the shop and asks the shop guy if he is going to go, (I was standing right there) and he said yes. Head of manufacturing asked when he'd be back and we told him thursday. He was under the impression wed be gone wed/thurs/fri, so was surprised when he heard wed be gone only one day.

Wednesday, we go down there and fix the machine up and get it running.
Left at 7am and get home at 11:50PM, loooong day.

This morning i go to work and hear all this talk about how pissed the head of manufacturing is at me because no one told him the shop guy was going!!!
I was beside myself, WTF. what a fin liar.

He went to the president,CEO anybody who would listen. I confronted my boss if he heard anything and he said that the manufacturing guy was mad and told my boss that I had never even asked him about taking the shop guy!!! My boss believed my story.

So tommorrow I have a meeting (that I called) with several bosses, all above me, about this.

Im so ticked I feel like just packing up and leaving. Been there 15 years.

I had a problem with this guy about 4-5 years ago but I have always kept it very professional with him.

sorry so long but my blood is still boiling..

I can see why you are pissed, but don't do something you are going to regret man. Jobs are not too easy to come by these days, and it sounds like you are in one that makes a lot of money.

You can leave if you want, but you probably need your foot in the door somewhere else before you tell your current company to F--- off.

I understand, but always have a job lined up before ya leave... especially in todays economy.

Also, you could just find the manufacturing guy while he's out and about sometime and kick him in the nutsack. That would probably make you feel better.

Not probably, most definately.

It so messed up because this guy is like one step above my boss,
and is lying through his teeth. I just dont understand it.

I called this meeting becuase I have to hear it with my own ears.

Straighten him out man, he won't be able to look you in the eye and tell you that he didn't approve it. Give him the staredown.

But seriously, hang onto your job, unless you hate it. Don't let one retard ruin it for you. Good luck.

That's why my former boss always used email for things like this. That way when someone at the same level or above him pulled something similar to this he could always pull out the email and tell them they were full of $hi+

He must be jealous of you. You thought out how to solve a problem fast and save the company some money. Hope your boss is willing to go to bat for you on this. Stick to your story and maybe the other worker could help out too. Either way that guy is a turd.

My wife works in manufacturing, the politics can get down right ruthless at times. Ya get some who believe the way to rise above is to kick everyone around them down.

I hate crap like that. Why can't people just go to work and make money for the company?

Update

so at the meeting I start off by saying i was confused about how you could say you didnt know he was going. He very angrily says "I didnt know"
I said you came down to the shop and asked specifically asked how long wed be gone.
He says "I didnt know until the end of the day."

Um, big difference in not knowing until the end of the day and saying you didnt know. He had sent emails specifically stating he didnt know, but conveniently left off the til the end of the day part.

I asked what the difference was what time he found out since he approved him going anyway.

He then tried to spin it into a union contract issue, and that he works very hard with that kinda of stuff and angrily asked if i even knew how much it was going to cost the company for him to go. I said no thats your job, thats why I came and asked.

He got very hostile again and carried on.

Bottom line is he was caught in a lie and wouldnt admit it, but others caught on.

Sounds like you did your job:D . I HATE the type of people your describing, I currently work with one (the owner) he will tell customers they need all kinds of work done to their cars and basically robs them blind (I'll fix that problem later  )

There is always a psycho somewhere in the food chain that makes things miserable for someone else. I don't know why but there always is.

I say:
1. Fly low under the radar and do your job to the best of your ability.
2. Document everything.
3. Always tell the truth.

You can't control the psycho and never will so don't try. Just always cover your butt when dealing with him.

We just got a new CEO (I report to him). He is absolutely non confrontational and will not make a decision. Every time I need an answer or approval from him I get "we'll discuss it later" and get that same answer later.

I find that supervisors at my job like to remind themselves that they are in charge because no one else knows it do to their incompetence....

Well, well...they must have worked at my agency, too. ;) It doesn't matter where you go, it's the same crap everywhere!

Good job on being subtle, and getting people to realize he was a liar...

2. Document everything.

Bingo.

He's a liar and can't be trusted, ever.

Email, writing, note from his mommy, whatever it takes....

Not dealing with him at all would be your best bet.

I'd make sure the Head of Manufacturing has to jump through hoops to get your "Engineering Support" from now on if you now have a better rapport with your boss he can get in on the tactic as well if he backs you.

Next time you are scheduled to help him on a big emergency production problem call in dead. :p

Don't screw the production people just him, he really deserves it.
