Is it true that a factory fuel pump on a 86 GN does not need a hot wire kit , only need a kit when updating the fuel pump to aftermarket pump . How true is this ?

Every turbo Buick benefits from a fuel pump hotwire and a volt booster,no matter what pump it has. If you have the stock pump,it is likely in need of replacement. The only way to know if it is good is to monitor fuel pressure at full throttle.

Kim, the wiring/connector on a 1986 fuel pump is different than a 1987, the pump is the same POS in both years, and would barley keep up at WOT with a completely stock GN.

The car wiring to the pump on both years is marginal as well, so yes, you need a hot wire on an '86 too! :)

The earlier years may even be worse, I recently checked voltage at the pump connector at the rear of a 1984 turbo car, and it was less than 5 volts? o_O

I do not understand how the damn car would run, but maybe that is why he now has to pull the heads!

Thanks Nick and Type 6 for the comment , that is what I was thinking but I did not know for sure if 86 had different wiring than the 87 . Thanks for clearing that up .
