Been doing some tuning this weekend with my MAF pro setup and noticed something that I don't think is good. I relocated the IAT sensor to the up pipe, right before the meth nozzle, so I can get a good reading as to what the true temperature is coming out of the intercooler. It's in the mid 80's in south florida, and while I'm crusing, I see intercooler temps around 100 degrees. When I go WOT from a stop, I see the temp climb agressively to around 180-190 degrees at over 100 mph in 3rd gear! That's can't be good, even though the meth is cooling down the intake temps.

I'm not ready to get a larger intercooler, but does this sound normal?

does not really sound out of line... I would be interested to see what the turbo outlet temps are... I would be really interested to see what kind of actual temp difference the stock intercooler makes... I guess what Im getting at is that if you are already running alky you could "delete" the intercooler. It would definatelly make for quicker spoolup.

What psi and what turbo? 80 degress above ambient is substantial.
Before you go swapping incoolers, I would check your compressor maps and make sure your in its efficency range.

Stock turbo, 20 psi.

Thanks,

Doug D
Do you know how to read compressor maps and have access to a turbo calculator?

It sounds to me like the stocker turbo is so far outside it efficency range that it's only blowing hot air. Add your super-sweet 80's technology OEM intercooler and your asking for trouble.

No I don't, can you show me?

Thanks,

The number doesnt sound out of line for a stock intercooler/turbo. Id bet it would be a lot worse if you did a burnout at the drags and staged it building boost on the line. I ran 11.80's with a stock turbo and a stock intercooler with a replacement neck, and new timing chain. The engine had over 100k on it and all else was stock including the 100k mile valve job. If your not running 12.20's or faster you can still squeeze more out of it.

The location of the intercooler was the real killer. The engineers wanted it out front but they lost that battle.

Doubling ambient temps is pretty easy to do on smaller/less efficient intercoolers, I have seen it on ebay intercoolers on imports at high psi. Then add on to that your stock turbo is not nearly as efficient at 20psi as say the new 6765 turbo would be.

Alky is saving your behind right now so keep it safe and all will be good. But I would like to see what the temps are in the plenum after the alky is on to see how much it is cooling down that 180 degrees.

I would like to see that also. I may get another IAT sensor and put it on the dog house. I've heard Meth takes temps down over 100 degrees.

Doug, your temps seem reasonable to me. For comparison my inlet temp was 175 on a 75 degree day at 26 lbs. boost with a TA-66Q and a 20 row stretch inter cooler. I'd like to hear other combinations and temps.
