Behind my garage there is a city easement about 12' wide, in the easement at the S.E. corner of my properity is a utility pole. Yesterday while walking the dogs I noticed that there were 8 dead birds laying next to the pole. I don't know if the low-life living behind me is sitting at his kitchen window and taking target practice or if the birds are electrocuting themselves in some sort of bird cult ritual or worse yet, some weird ass disease.....anybody ever seen anything like this.....i don't know if i should call the health department, the police, or the electric company.....any suggestions ?

Well do the birds have holes in them? If they do then they are getting shot. Do they have a burnmark anywhere on there feathers? If so they are getting electricuted. If they dont have either of those they probably have a weird disease.

Might be west nile virus. Were they actually dead or did they look dead?
With west nile, they'll lay there like they are dead, but their eyes will still be moving...THEN they'll die at some later time.
You can't get the virus from the birds, but your local extension office should have a recorded message on whether or not they want to come out and test the birds. Usually if west nile is present in your county, they don't bother.
With 8 birds though... I would suspect a short in the pole

With 8 or so dead birds laying that close of proximity to a pole, and all grouped that close together, I suspect.......................

There are 3 houses behind me that have a clear line of sight at that pole. All of them have screens in the windows except 1, and that happens to be the one directly behind me with the best look at the pole.......maybe sometime late tonight I'll take those birds and dump them on their porch.

I had the same thing happen when a crane hit a line about one block away.Except I Had about 300 smoking crow's in my back yard they smoked for a few minute's but look normal.
Well had 2 more dead birds for a total of 10 now......I'm leaning to the fact that they got smoked. All of their feet are burned off. There are several large trees in the easement that are all over the power lines. Maybe the recent winds and rain have something to do with it ?
