Guys, Rick's car will probably using products from his company's advertisers...
Let's enjoy the ride and see what he can put together, it is great to see our cars still getting some press.
Not every car has to be an established recipe build.
I am hoping that they will update the wheels/tires and brakes to something more modern but not too crazy.

X2!

Well what are some of the ways to counter the turbo lag that comes with these headers?

Oh, and we'll be sure to do before and after tests with each step along the way.

There are other brands that are proven, and work well. T/A and GSCA both make good sets that wont hinder the performance.

Sorry John, but I very much dis-agree with your statement as this is an embarrassment to the turbo Buick and total BS to do a project like this using crap parts on a GN because of advertising revenue?

It shows a total disregard of proven methods and parts that have been developed over the years, and shows that they are "all about the $$$$$". :(

This board has been the source of "quality" info about turbo Buicks, and we have done our best to filter the BS to maintain our integrity.

Seems like Grumpy, Dave and I are the only ones with enough balls to tell it like it is???

1.) You're entitled to your opinion

It shows a total disregard of proven methods and parts that have been developed over the years...

2.) Sorry Nick, but totally dismissing a magazine's project car simply because it's not built entirely out of parts from TR niche companies just shows your lack of open-mindedness. If nothing else, think of the "crap" Hooker headers as a learning experience for not only us, but our readers. If there are power gains, we'll report them. If not, and/or there's a huge amount of turbo lag that everyone suggests there will be, we'll make note of that too.

Also, maybe it will convince Hooker that perhaps they need to redesign their headers, if necessary.

...and shows that they are "all about the $$$$$". :(

3.) We're "all about the money?" Think again. This car wasn't purchased for the sole purpose of editorial. I've been a fan of Buick Grand Nationals since 1987, they've been in my family since 1989, and this particular example used for this build has been in my possession since 2009, after being previously owned by a relative for 11 years. It's not getting bought, built, and sold off once the project is completed like you see in other publications - I'm keeping it. Probably forever.

This board has been the source of "quality" info about turbo Buicks, and we have done our best to filter the BS to maintain our integrity.

4.) Agreed. That's why I've been coming here and have been a registered member of TurboBuick.com since 2004. I've learned a lot from my personal experiences with the car, reading the posts here, and other reference materials that I've acquired over the years. Like I've mentioned in a previous post, I'm always open for suggestions, recommendations, and general insight from those who are willing to lend a hand.

Seems like Grumpy, Dave and I are the only ones with enough balls to tell it like it is???

5.) Again, the three of you are entitled to your opinion, and I welcome all of your insight and suggestions. If anybody on this board would like to say anything to me regarding this project, feel free to shoot me a PM here, or an email at rseitz@powerautomedia.com. I'll be sure to respond promptly.

Also, if there are any TR niche companies willing to help out with the project I'm more than happy to speak with you as well. I'd like to get as many "proven" parts on this car as possible, and I'd LOVE to give some of the Turbo Buick parts manufacturers some press. I think they're all long overdue.

Thanks,
Rick Seitz

Rick, I do not want to start a pissin' contest with you, but you are dead WRONG about me not being open-minded as I have been listening and learning about turbo Regals for over 25 years, and continue to do so every day.

As far as the Hooker headers, they have been proven to be "crap", so just by you using them gives validity, which is not deserved, and taints the project.

I do not care which parts you use, but my opinion is that they should be the best available for their intended job.

Any GN publicity and projects are warmly welcomed by myself and the rest of the Buick community, but please do a credible, honest and informative job that we all can be proud of! :)

I agree with this, and it's what my plan has been all along. If you're willing to talk to me about this project on the phone Nick, I'll be happy to do so. :)

Thank you Rick, I look forward to hearing from you, and meeting you in person on June 2 at the Bates Buick event. :)

I'll be there - with the car! :)

what are you looking for HP or ET's ??

Eh, it's primarily going to be a pro-touring car. It will be at smaller, but popular events like Goodguys Super Sunday, and perhaps a little light road racing at some of the local courses around SoCal. I don't want to "trash it," but I do want to have fun with this car, and still have the ability to reliably daily drive it if I wanted to.

Having said that, I would like to get it into the mid-12's in the 1320. I know, I know, welcome to 1988...

But I'm looking for a more balanced machine that can do a little bit of everything while still look largely stock (save for ride height, brakes, and wheels/tires, obviously).

Let me know your thoughts.

................... If you're willing to talk to me about this project on the phone Nick, I'll be happy to do so. :)

Please call me next week after I return May 7 from the G-Body/TB.com event in NC, as I should have some products/items for you to use and/or test in this project.

I will also contact some turbo Buick vendors there to help support your planned project.

Rick,
Thanks for supporting the upcoming Bates Buick show. Let me know if that thing needs bumper fillers, I'll hook you up. Just remember that NO horse power gains will be seen by adding them.

Unless of coarse you install the "Spoolfool Productions" sticker. Then, forty to sixty horse power gains have been reported. Your results may very.;)

Kool project.
Happy spooling.

Rick, you should also get in contact with Scot W. at GNS Performance if you're interested in really making your car handle the pro-touring, autocross and road courses!! He's "been there, done that" with his car, and can advise you on the best parts. I know his car handles and brakes like a slot car. He's at the TB.com/G-Body nats this week, but may be monitoring emails.

Thanks, Nick! I very much appreciate that, and I'll be sure to get in contact with you then.

Dave, I wrote an article on Scot's car last summer, but I'll be sure to get in touch with him when he returns from the TB.com/G-body Nats. In fact, he was on the list of people to contact for this story.

Mike, check your inbox. ;)

Dyno'd the GN today with the new headers. I'll post the graphs once the story is live, but we picked up 6 hp and 12 ft.-lbs of torque to the rear tires with the Hooker headers in conjunction with the cat bypass pipe.

Might not be Earth-shattering, but a gain is a gain. Stay tuned for the full story...

To make it real, now you should to do a comparison with other providers headers, sponsor or not, to see the differences.

It's the only true test even though some of your sponsors would disagree because their product may not measure up, but it would be real TV to a car guy.

I only ask becuase, by the responses, it's obvious you're view seems somewhat skewed.

Isn't the truth what this board is truly after? Or will the car be subjected to a test with an agenda, a bought and paid for agenda? We read that in car publications every month.

If you are going to put forth a vehicle as unique as a Turbo Regal, be it GN or not, give it a fair shake at it's potential, one with proper direction, insight and knowledge.

But it's only an opinion.....

Good luck.
