I love you Strom, and may you rest in peace. The Senate hasn't been the same since you left, and the world won't be the same either, now that you're gone. However, Heaven is a better place now with you in it. Goodbye to one of my true heroes. You will be greatly missed.

Damn and I thought he had another 2 terms left in him........oh well.

You said it turbojimmy! Why couldn't Trent have stayed away from that old dude just one more year?!?!? Everything could've been so much better! Oh well............

Cant say I will miss the old racist

First off he was never a racist. He was a segragatinist. There's a difference. Second, he denounced his segragatinist views by the late 60's/early 70's. He also supported a holiday for Martin King. Racist? Not at all.

The bastage lived just long enough to f'up Trent Lott's career.

RIP

Jim

Trent stepped down, so it's his own fault. He wasn't about to lose his leadership post. He just pissed off some people for having the courage to tell the truth.

Trent was good, but wasn't perfect either (the closest thing to a perfect Senator was Jesse Helms). He supported that stupid chemacle weapons treaty back in '96 or '97 or so. But he was an honorable man and shouldn't have given up his leadership post for a personal opinion.

jessie helmes a perfect senator?
hmmmmm...i wonder what gay people think about that......

Who cares what they think? Senator Helms didn't cave in and support their unnatural agenda. He deserves an award for that, and countless other things he championed, like prayer in school, the right to life, the right to have guns, to end affirmative action, foreign aid, fierce anti-Communism, etc. He is my greatest hero from the Senate, and I cried when he retired.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course.

But crying over any politician is a waste of water. They're not heroes, for heaven's sake, they're servants. This guy served blind ideology, not real people, as he was wheeled out like a cadaver to cast party-line votes when he should have retired to a rest home long before most of us were born.

If you know anyone who earns minimum wage, relies on Medicare, believes in free speech, enjoys the national forests, has ever declared bankruptcy, or is trying to learn in an overcrowded classroom, then you should be glad this man has gone to his rest.

Uh, can you explain that difference please? Because I'm just not seeing it....

So that the affected persons will also all of a sudden get it!Geeeze, was that all it took, a TB forum? Wish I thought of that. Drew

What sounds better:

"The IRS appropriated Bob's bank account"
-or-
"The IRS stole all of Bob's money!!"

"Appropriated" is just a nice sounding word for "stolen", just as "segregationist" is just a nice sounding word for "racist".

Renounced his segregationism? He also switched parties. Gee, sounds like the ultimate politician: Do Whatever It Takes To Benefit ME

The 'perfect' politician? I ain't EVEN goin' there...

I clicked on it and I agreed with about 90% of the issues he supported. I won't argue about anything else. My purpose of this topic was to pay my respects to Mr. Thurmond, not get into a decate on his policies. If you wanna talk politics with me, you (and anyone else, left or right wing) are welcome to come to Knight's Realm and debate with me there.

Segregationists support the seperation of races. In theory, you don't have to hate blacks (or white, if you're a black segregationist, and yes, they exist) to support seperating races. Virtually everone in Strom's time agreed this way down South. He also changed his views in the early 70's.

Liberal invasion?

What's going on here? Used to be, I was always arguing with the neo-conservatives. Now, liberals are coming out in force here. What gives?
