What is the strongest

longest living lock-up

for use in a 500rwhp

3500# street'strip

car w/a 2004-R?

What lock-up

can take its

WOT OD shifts

reliably & endure?

IMHO.... NOBODY makes a lockup that will live any longer with WOT lockups than the 5-disk vigilante by Precision.

hmmm... this should be interesting ... anyway Melissa's GN has a 9/11 from Bruce @PTS .. prob has around 13k on it now .. hasn't missed a beat ..

I wouldnt p!ss on a Precision converter.

Id have to say the 9/11 as well. Shane's burgundy car has one in it that's been 130+ lots of times and been rock solid.

IMHO, I'd agree. I've hammered the (**(&^ out of mine for a good many years, and I lock mine every run at the track, but then again, I was only making about 470HP in a 3800# car.

Grumpy, does she WOT lock it at the track? If she does then I'm impressed. Taken any slippage #'s lately?

Even though I an not a Precision lover, I woul dhave to say that the Precision would be a better choice of the 9/11.
9/11 = 1 Big Disc
P.I = 5 Discs
Which do you think will last longer!
IMO

It doesnt work that way. Ask anyone thats raced a clutch car.

I know there are people on the boards running the 9/11.... but it is still one disk.... I know of one Vigilante that has a pile of upper 130's mph passes on it.... several years worth actually....

I realize that Grumpy has ran 138mph on the 9/11...... but be honest..... how many locked passes has the converter survived? I know it has held up so far.... but IMHO....put 75 lockup passes on it in the upper 130's and show me the data and time slips to show converter slippage. IMHO... it will eventually smoke the clutch.....

Now.. if you want to compare efficiency unlocked.... I will bow down... cause the vigilante isn't the poster boy for converter efficiency when unlocked....

I have had 3 very reputable tranny builders on here tell me the insides to the vigilante are in a class by itself. I just wish they could figure out what PTC has figured out about how to get the stall out of it yet be more efficient down track....

Let the flames begin.....

Cummon... give credit where it is due..... it is the front runner for maximum effort lockups that even the company that builds them will tell you is OK to lock at WOT......

They do have their ideosyncrocies.... the infamous rattle.... as well as slipping 30% when not locked..... but lock that puppy.... and she will be there.

actually!

a 9x11 has 2 discs. The inside of a non lock vig is no different than anyone else is using short of the billet cover. The great things about the vig lock up {either single disc or 5 disc is the lock-up} is the lock up.The other stuff like the pumps and the turbine are no different than anyone else.

mike.

I think you are mistaken about the insides.... they are not like anyone elses.

I know of one vigilante that was sent to a prominent converter manufacturer to be re-stalled... because they could turn it around quickly.... it didn't turn out so well.... they first said.... "we have your converter open and it will cost XX $ to re-stall it"...... a few hours later they called back..... "now we really have your converter open... and it is XX + XX to restall it." Long story short... they had 2 tries at re-stalling it... the converter ended up grenading.. and taking the tranny with it.....

Maybe the non-lockups are similar... but the lockups are a different animal....

I think I read Bill A. say that the 9/11 was good up to 750hp. How many street cars have that kind of power.... I'd say much more than that you may want to go NLU or to a 400 anyway....

The 9/11 Jay mentioned I got has had the snot ran out of it. I will stick with them as they have served me well.

Just IMO:biggrin:

They Are

It just 245mm converter stuff. the single disc lock up is a aod-e lock up disc and a billet cover. The turbine hub is aod-e broached for the 27 spline input shaft of the 200-4r.

I agree !!!

4 years of Buick event racing (not an every weekend racer) and street driving--locking @ the top of 3rd --My Pricision 5 disc has never failed.

If so.... how does a prominent torque converter manufacturer.... totally screw up a perfectly good converter? if the insides are just like everyone elses?

Also... if it is just like anyone elses.... why aren't other manufacturers making lock-ups that will hold up at WOT with big HP if the internal parts are std run-of-the mill stuff. The number of converter manufacturers that say "lock it" at WOT on 500+ RWHP is very few.... most won't touch and claims of WOT lockup...

IMHO.... the 9/11 is probably worthy of WOT lockups...but the OP was asking for opinions on the "strongest".... and IMHO.... the 5-disk vigilante is unmatched for it's lockup abilities.
