I have a 1985 GN and want to put in a 160 degree thermo. The guy who sold me the car told me not to put it in unless I change the chip. I think he is dead wrong, but just to be safe, what do ya say? Right now I assume it has the stock thermo, and I get readings of anywhere from 200-200 degrees.

hey

change the stat the chip has nothing to do with the way the cooling system works except for a electric fan but in your case its a hot air so it doesnt have one. change the stat to a 160

brent:D

The only thing I can think of is if it has the stock chip and only runs 160 degrees, it might not go into closed loop. I know with a lot of aftermarket chips it will hit closed loop as soon as 140 degrees. Not sure about the stocker though. That might be what the guy was talking about and it's a valid reason to change the chip.
