I was on a site about Turbo's and found the TE44, the TE51, TE52 and the TE60. But as I looked, I scrolled down and found some rather interesting turbo's. They were RPM's. I'm assuming this is a good company, right? The T72 says that it can get your car to the high ten's with just installing it. Does anybody have one of these turbo's to attest to this?

I was also wondering. If one puts in things such as a quality intercooler, and other quality parts. (The average stuff, nothing exotic) Could you get the car down to low ten's, maybe even high or mid 9's on the 1/4? It's rather theoretical, most of my questions. But, what I mean to ask is, can this be done?

Thank you for taking the time out to answer this for me.

WOW
the only thing to beat you down the track will be your head gaskets. Add intercooler and normal stuff and you'll be also beat to the finish line by your hood.:D

Ah, snake oil comes in many forms........:D

The keys to getting these cars deep into the low numbers are combo and tuning. Throwing cubic dollars at a GN without a plan is only good for the guy selling you the parts. There is no magic turbo that can propel you into the low 10s without the rest of the engine being built to that spec.

Figure this- there have been more than a few cars in the 11s, and I believe even into the high 10s, with bolt-ons only; matched parts that compliment each other, and a tune that lets the components work most efficiently together.

Down into the low 10s or 9s is another game altogether- the chassis setup comes into play, and you gotta play by NHRA rules if you hope to pass tech.

Well, could you give me a little 'starters list' toward moving my way in the right direction SouthernCal? I would be very appreciative.

Also, WiskeyJack, I thank you for the compliments. ;)

So if I can build my car's other parts around this turbo, as in, to compliment it, I could definately become a contender, right?

Be happy to- could you please list your car's current mods, and your goals?

Well, that's the thing. I'm still hunting for one. I'm closing in on a deal right now so I'm hoping that comes through. So I have nothing really set in stone. So the car I'm closing in on getting is an 84. Basically totally stock.

(Even if this car doesn't come through for me, I'm still hunting for an 84, so I'm sure I'll still run by your list anyway)

For the $$$ that you'll put into a hot air car (84/85) to get really decent levels of performance, I'd continue your search for an 86/87 intercooled car. Much easier to mod, and you should be able to find a decent GN or T for about 7-10K.

If you haven't bookmarked this site, do so now, and refer to it ofter:
Turbo Regal Web Site
It's more or less the bible of these cars, and has a wealth of information- history, performance, maintenance, technical info, and more.

For a good mid 11 sec car (assuming the 86/87 car being modded is sound):
intake- cone
exhaust- duals with ultraflo mufflers
fuel pump with hotwire- 340
injectors - 60s
chip - TurboTweak
turbo- 44, maybe a 60
Alky kit

You can get these used from board members, and for an outlay of a couple of grand, you've got yourself a killer car that will outperform most of the cars onthe street, and will get you decent fuel economy and comfort.

I saw this on another post:

12s= hundreds of $
11s= couple thousand $
10s= many thousand $
9s= hope your rich!

I would look for the 86-87 Turbo Buick. Don't get me wrong. hot air cars are nice but you can dump some serious cash in upgrades before you are able to come close to an Intercooled Car.

I just spent $4600 on heads, Intake and Turbo and that was a killer deal! Looking to spend another $4000 on a short block. $2000+ on a tranny and don't forget the $1500 on the rear end. Thats just the begining! A fuel pump for my goal is $600!!!! My goals are 9s but I am not rich. This is why it is taking me 2 years to do this.

Read, read and read so more before your start upgrading. Take your time and plan your combo. Ask questions! If your goals are 11s, then plan for 11s, but if your goal is 10s, take your time, plan and only buy once! Check out my Signature and you will see what I mean.

Sorry

Took you the wrong way. If you haven't bought a car 86/87 are the ones to look for. You don't want to buy one of these cars on a whim and think you can hit the streets and be blowing away Vettes and Vipers unless the car was professionally built and you spent weeks with the builder learning how to use a scanmaster and how to tune and what to listen to when racing.
The Grand National is a nasty car but takes a special person to own one that will last.
First read all you can on these forums when gong out to buy one find or pay someone who really knows these car to go with you as hidden damage is the norm(head gaskets, Transmissions, turbos) and check it out real good and get a test drive.
After getting a car first if it does not have on get a scan master and learn how to read it.
Mods - read forums get to know the vendors for parts most reputable ones advertise on this forum. Ask questions ask questions and have a lot of money ready.

Again Sorry:biggrin:

S'ok.

I do want to own this car badly. I suppose I should then lead into the area of an 86 and an 87 then. I want to reach around 10's personally. Nothing insanely fast like an 8 or a 9. Not now anyway. Maybe in awhile though. But, right now I just want to get the car and then start putting money away for the stuff.

Thank you guys for all your help.

this is so true with these cars. once you try to get the car reliably in the 10's you are going to spend big money, trans,axles,BIG turbo,motor,etc,etc i shoulda stayed in the 11's and i just might, even after i spend these thousands of dollars.:eek: buy an 86-87 TR and do lots of research..start slow and progess faster as you figure out what the car likes and you learn how to tune. if you go fast too quick you will be changing head gaskets or rebuilding motors on a regular basis. i've changed a couple of sets of head gaskets and both times the fault was mine:frown: .......good luck.....Bob

A good point to remember- don't let emotion get in the way. It can cost you big $$$$$$!

I still say hold out for an 86/87- I've owned both, and there's a world of difference.

Yeah. I'm going to try my best to control that, "I MUST BUY NOW!" urge. ;)

Thank you for the advice. I will do my best to hold off for an 86/87. As you guys said, it just is easier to set that one up for racing than it is for the 84. Not to say it's impossible for the 84, but, the 86/87 just seems more inclined off the start.

Thanks for opening me up to that! My deepest thank you's.

IMO and experience.......

If you are worried about money and want a Fast car....

It is much cheaper to buy the car ALREADY built than to try and build it yourself, especially if you are not doing the work yourself. No brainer.

There are many nice FAST Turbo Buicks that are put on the market and priced at nearly 1/2 of what it took to build the car.

shoot i'm nearing $17k and still need another $4k to go and i have'nt even been down the track yet:eek:

Wow. That's pretty nuts.

But I don't care about the cost. I know when I get it hooked up, it's going to be SWEET. Plus, my job pays good so I think I'm cool for now anyway. :)
