I bought a TA49 turbo off ebay as a 500 mile unit. Upon inspection it has a tag that says rebuilt. I emailed the seller as he didn't mention rebuilt. He say that TA 49's are made from other units and are not new but all are rebuilt into a TA49. IS this true or can you buy one new?

The cartridge can be bought new. The ex housings, compressor backing plate, and compressor cover are often salvaged from OEM turbos. TA means stock appearing so they start with stock parts and machine them to work with the larger wheels. It is common to see a TA 49 with a housing other than a .63 Garrett and i have seen them with billet backing plates and the later casting compressor cover. None of which is actually stock appearing but they still call them TA49. The stock compressor backing plate is old tech and there is benefit to the later designed ones that accept dynamic oil seals to reduce drag. You dont see many totally stock appearing TA 49's anymore.

Bison,
Mine says Garrett on it and it appears new. I'm new to the TB's and when I saw this Turbo advertised as 500 miles,I assumed it was an ALL NEW unit. Not rebuilt with other parts. How much bigger is it than stock? I've noticed that it is a VERY popular upgrade, and much in demand.

Its a ver common upgrade and will support low 11 sec runs fairly easily wit the right combo, tune and some boost. It really needs a torque converter to g owith it but many use the stock converter with it. Dont ever assume anything when buying anything. Post pics so we can see it.
