I'm considering upgrading my stock torque converter and looking for advice on converter and stall recommendations. The car currently drives fine and has plenty of street manners, but is a bit slow on the spool up.

Mostly my car is a street car with the infrequent trips to the strip. So obviously I'm not looking for an all out race converter, but looking more for more aggressive street manners and faster spool up.

What stall would you recommend? Would 2800 be too mild and 3200 too aggressive? How about manufacturer for a lockup converter or recommended models?

Thanks

I don't have any recommendations for a convertor or stall speed, but...
I ran a TA-49 with the stock convertor and a RJC manual boost controller($49). I swear by that boost controller, it was like night and day on my car. The turbo lag was almost gone once I put it on. Instead of getting half way through the stop light before roasting the tires half to death, it would roast them almost instantly (without power braking it, just foot off of brake and hit the gas). Not trying to sell you on a product it just my personal experience. I just thought I would throw that at you as an option, because sometimes after you put a bigger stall in a tranny you start running into tranny problems. -Nick.

The stock convertor works ok. Everyone will tell you it's too much, but I really like my 9" lockup 3200 stall Vigillante. It's not needed but talk about a tire smoker with the 49. It's fine for daily driving, you barely notice it's there when you're cruising but put your foot in it from a stop and if you're not on drag radials you will spin before you ever hit boost.

Hi Nick, I already have a manual boost controller (Don't know the make, it's a knob) that came with a used Racegate that I bought. My experience from changing from the stock turbo to the TA-49 was more boost and power, but the delivery time was not as fast as the stock. My Transmission was rebuilt about 3,000 miles ago and a new shift kit installed, so it should take some punishment, although I'm really considering an external trans cooler soon as well.

Quick 84 2, so the street manners with your TA49 are still good with that 3200 stall Vigilante? I definite wanting a more aggressive delivery, but was thinking that 3200 may be too much.

I'm actually running a T-66 and 3,200 now but it worked great with the 49 also. It's not necessary but the car is so responsive I could never go back. Driving normal you barely notice it. If you go with one of the newer 9" units like the Vigillante or 9-11 they're still very efficient plus you retain lockup. The only downside is they're expensive, much more expensive than a restalled D5 convertor.

I originally ran ~3,800 stall with the 66 but it was a bit much since my car was a daily driver back then. But the fun factor was there. I could nail the gas off a stop light without starting with boost and practically give unsuspecting passengers whiplash.

You can try posting this in the transmission tech area for a larger opinion.

In general, with a TA49, you should have a 2800 stall. unless u plan on going with a bigger turbo later on, 2800 is the one you need.

3200 will give you that whiplash effect; if you like that, go right on ahead

I agree with you for the most part. I know what they recommend but a lot of times that's for the track when you have time to sit there stalling it up. I like to have a certain "feel" and responsiveness on the street. If you "play" around on the street, the looser convertors are nice when you're sitting there with no boost and someone jumps out on you unexpectedly or you're rolling too fast to downshift to second but out of the powerband in third. I agree a 2,800 is more than enough for a 49 and I'm not saying a 3,200 will get you down the 1320 any faster. It's just more fun in a street car IMO.

Edit- After looking at the thead in the general tech area, I forgot to mention that my Vigillante rattles very bad on decelleration, enough that other people look at me. I've had it out to get rebuilt, put a stock one in it's place, no rattles, then put the Vigillante back in and the rattles are back. PTS is the way to go IMO.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm starting to really consider going the a Pat's converter. I really don't think I could stand my converter rattling like the Viligante does and I have a friend that has a 9/11 that manufacturing flaw that cost him $400 to get fixed.

I also think of a middle of the road stall, maybe 3000.

i see we have a keyboard fake responding to a post that they know nothing about. the internet can be so misleading with people posting responses that has no real life experiences  . but back to the topic i ran that turbo a few years ago with a 2800 stall converter and it worked great. i made some mid 12's passes with that combo with a best mile per hour of 110. i could have run faster but the sixty foots was way off like 1.90's to 2.00's. if it is mainly a street car i would say stay with the 2800 unless you plan on upgrading turbos in the near future.

Who might the keyboard fake be??

i care not to say. he knows who he is. he made a remark about my son and that constitutes an a$$ whippin when i see him. you can say what you want about me but my children thats something else. iam not someone who make post without some type of real life experiences. i will not say no more of him until i can see him not behind a keyboard. just saw someone posting that has done nothing with these cars, no track times no races and really no miles driven that amounts to no more than the driveway. now back to the post i was pleased with my 2800 stall and that turbo, from someone whos been there done that.
