I just got myself an intercooled Ta49 and wanted to take advantage of the larger compressor housing. Immediately after reclocking the turbo I now recognized the problem with installing the turbo. Besides the compressor housing being too long the turbo is also somewhat offset from the centerline of the adapter. So with that said even if one was to cut the housing and weld the turbo outlet bell on to the housing, you still would have to deal with the centering problem. Thats probably is the backing plate adapter that John Craig spoke of. But if there's a will there's a way and I'l somehow make it work. I know a few of you here on the board have fabricated your own designs but the details of your fabrications are not that clear. But I'm a Hot Air owner I'm used to overcoming obstacles. Anyway just the size of the turbo over the stock hotair turbo is massive and I'm sure there will be some benefits over the stock design just from the larger housing. I guess I will soon find out. I will keep you all updated on my progress.

ta 49

talked to precision turbo in indiana and they can get a ta 49 into a hotair housing they call it a ta48. so my turbo is on the way there. maybe they can do something for your setup

No, What I am trying to do is adapt an intercooled ta49 turbo to the hot air set up to make use of the bigger compressor housing.

ta 48

i think they told me for the ta 48 like 800 with a new actuator. they would need you turbo to do it also as he didnt have any cores.
i have mine boxed and ready to go just havent had time yet.
he said it would need 42.5 lbs injectors and joe lubrant works with him and would be able to burn a chip for this setup

how much tinkering are you willing to do? I put a pt 61 on mine and made a simple bracket to mount it up front. At the same time I relocated the TB so that it's got it's own intake tube leading into the manifold. that makes it blow through instead of draw through. I have some pics, everything is going pretty good so far. Should be finishing it up in a week or so.

front mount turbo on a hot air--pics

timberwolf-----I would like to see those pics you have,I been thinking of a way to mount my turbo up front just as you did. The pis would help me a lot,,thanks,,Jack

rubber coupling.. the lip on the turbo is big enough however i'm sure you'll have to figure something out for the intake side.. maybe weld the turbo adapter into the intake then clamp the rubber coupling to it.

Modification in progress !! I had a stock 87 turbo and a few 84-85 intake adapters laying around so I cut the the turbo compressor housing and the intake adapter. Then test fit them both on my spare motor I have sitting on the stand. Got all the measurements right, now the Ta49 is off to the shop for welding. It's a done deal !!!!

How did the TA48 work out for you? Have you had a chance to road test it yet? What was the acutual cost if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks,
Tim
