All of the recent talk of the GT series turbos has me itching to try one. Currently I'm running a TE44 w/ 009's, stock IC, ported irons, & 3000 stall TC, with a set of 57's on the shelf. Will my money be better spent on a TE61w/GT wheels or on a big-a$$ed IC? 90% street driven, runs mid-12's @ 110 on alky & street radials.

My buddy's about to pick up a TTA so now there are more Joneses to keep up with :D

Anyone else have an opinion as i have the same combo and was also curious!

Depending on how fast you are looking to go, they both are real good choices. Getting a Intercooler could allow you to get into the mid to low 11s with what you have now. But a bigger turbo without a better intercooler could limit the potential of that bigger turbo. If interested in saving a few buck in the process. For a car that is mostly street driven you will have more bang for the buck out of the larger intercooler if it is a front mount due to heat soak. The larger intercooler will basically let you beat up on your car more before performance goes down due to heat. The larger turbo will not really make a difference until the upper boost range which does not really come to play on 93 octane on the street.

Blacksix,

FWIW I have a regular TA 61 on my wifes TR and its gone a best of 11.48#117, 155 60' time with 009s, 10" 3200 stall LU Pats Conv, MT ET Streets, stock IC with Duttweiler neck, Jim Testa Race chip, open dump and deltagate at 25 psi.

HTH and best of luck.

FWIW again, I've run 12.0@116mph (bad 2.03 60' time) on 100-octane gas, with more to go. I have a TA-49 (similar to your TE-44) with a Precision 0.63 housing, running about 23 psi of boost. Other important stuff is a CAS V-2 front-mount, T+ with Extender chip and 3" MAF, 3" THDP, ATR 2.5" exhaust, and 57-lb injectors.

The 44/49's are great turbos, especially if you like street duty. If I were you, I'd get a big front mount and Ramchargers fans. The FMIC made a big difference in my car.

Just one man's opinion...

if you are going with a bigger turbo...i would go with the PT61 turbo from Precision...it currently uses a 61mm GT compressor wheel and is good to 675 horsepower capable of mid 10's...

if going with an intercooler, definitely go with a PTE front-mount...
