Has anyone just went to their local bone yard and picked up a TH400, rebuilt it, put a manual valve body in it and then drove it? If so, how's it held up. I see some of the TH400's on here and they seem priced high to me. $1300-$2000 seems to be about the norm, and that's just for the tranny. I can pick up a good used TH400 for $100 down here, at almost any junkyard.....I'm thinking I could put one together myself.........anyone done this??????

Of course you can go down to the junkyard and pick one up. If you know how to do a quality build up, then the $$$$ is in your pockets.

How much do you think the good parts cost and the trans guy has to get paid for his labor:o

The junk yards are full of transmissions.Go get an atsg manual and build it yourself. After you buy all the parts, direct drum and sprag and the valve body youll see that your not too far behind the price of a good rebuilt unit though.Priced high?We sell a th400 with a brake for $1249.00.

Remember, you must mod the T400 trans pressure so you don't take out the thrust bearing on the Buick engine. I am sure there are other tricks the trans guys have learned over the years as well. I got the manual, and a video on the T 400 and tore into the 400 in my old Jeep Wagoneer. Put it all back together and it worked. But for the Buick, high HP, and rep. we just called Chris and ordered a T400 that was tested before it shipped. You can't beat a man at his own game. $1200.00 - $1300.00 is cheep insurance.

I've actually emailed Chris a few times inquiring about his tranny's, so that thought has entered my mine and the price seems reasonable. My question was more about if anyone had built their own TH400 from a junkyard and if so, did it hold up for them. It wasn't so much to say that any particular vendor did or didn't have a good deal........

IMO why take the chance to save $300-$400 . :) you'll save that just not having to pull it out again .

I am sure you could do it, you can search for post on the pressure mods and how to do them here. There also are some tools you would need as well but you can make them.
