Ok..Turbo Trans Am owner coming over here to start trouble...

Heres the question..this one is bad..ready..

Why is it that Original un-opened motors can handle bookoo amounts of boost..like 25PSI plus..yet once the heads are off it and put back on..its just never the same boost handling and higher tendencies for blowing gaskets....

Was it something GM did to seal it up..torque sequence..stretch on bolts..???

Thought this might be entertaining..on a serious note..

GM used a machine that tightened all of the head bolts EVENLY....No Torque sequence to follow....They just tightened down all of the bolts with one large machine that turned each head bolt at the same exact time.


As for having them not seal once they are off for the first time.....that can be debated........

Well a lot of the guys I've talked too say that on an un-opened motor..give it all the boost you want..But once the gasket goes..it becomes one of those chores when a mistake is made..

Could it be the machine stretched the head bolts differently..or they used a sealer for the HG..

I have seen some builders glue the gaskets down..the use of stacked shim gaskets with silicone for example..and everyone claims "this is the better way to build a mouse trap"..

I have personally seen a stock motor without detonation go past 30 lbs without taking out the gasket..cant say the same for my buddies who use the felpro's..

So is the un-opened motor thing a Myth or Fact

Same applies to the ARP bolts vs the TTY

Ok .... So i was thinking. Next time i replace my head gaskets I could get 7 friends together with torque wrenchs and we could torque the head bolts down in one shot together!

If thats what it takes...and 8 calibrated the same torque wrenches...

Ahh..how many degrees are you gonna turn em past 60 ft lbs..this is the problem..

I know that every stock motor i have seen has been indistructable (headgasket sealing wise) . I have never seen one blow a headgasket,but once the seal is broken it`s never the same . Think about it you port the heads your letting in more air that make more compresion . I could only run 12 lbs of boost safely on my t-type on pump gas.The stock graphite head gasket is all i have used on the the 109 blocks ,my 1985 2552140 block uses stock steel shim and thats what i have used on it.
