Well since we finally have a little heat on tap up here i want to get my GN AC going.. Yeah yeah I talked about it last year & ended up waiting.

Here is what I have done so far.
I bought a retro fit kit with oil/134 & extra 134.

When I placed the gauge on the system & ran the motor the gauge said 45 psi..

?? COULD this 45 psi be just AIR or the R-12 in the system ??

How can you tell? Is there a tool or way someone can check what resides in the system ??

If it is Air or Freon would I need to have it evacuated by a shop?

Any other things to check before I do any adding of 134?

You need to vacuum the system down. This will also be sure you have fixed all the leaks. If it holds -30 vac for 15-20 minutes you are cool. Then you can add your oil, 134a, and you shouyld be good to go. Have you replaced the hoses, seals, o-rings, and the dryer? If not, make yourself happy and cool - replace it all before filling it up....

Once its vacuumed down, you can fill and check. You should be checking temperature, not really pressure, because the air temp has an effect. You want the high-side (red gauge) to be fairly low (below 200), otherwise the system has a bunch of air, and its not cooling properly. Its temperature drop across the coil you are after. Suction side (blue) around 30 is good - but again, check temperature. Look for a 40 degree coil or so.

If you're going to vacuum the system down (this is where you say "YES, I AM!") replace your dryer, seals (with the green ones) and filter. Not a bad idea to drain the compressor also. Replace the oil with Esther type oil, vacuum down as stated above and refill. Voila.

I just did my AC swap to 134a.A new dryer, seals, & self adjusting orifice tube were installed. Then i used some special flush which evaporates super fast..some nasty crap.. We used thinner oil than required per a news release from Modine/Delphi which allows the old compressors run quieter. Cools very well, better than my last swap on the GN which never worked right. Just need some dual fans to help pull the heat out in traffic and it will be as good as it gets with 134a.
