can someone explain how this works without it. I'm guessing it (ECM) figures it out some other way now.
 
The MAT sensor is not used for any chip changes on the Turbo Buick. It's table in the chip is filled with 0's. Since this sensor has no effect on anything the chip or anything ecm does, it is perfect for use as an input.

THE TIMING vs MAT TABLE is 0'd out.

IT IS USED IN THE MAF FUEL CORRECTION

While the correction for fuel at *normal temps* isn't huge at the limits of the table it is signifigant.
 
A lot of the chip makers have the "MAF Lock" feature that ignores those corrections, so it's pretty benign.
