Thinking about building a getaway or hunting cabin

Well I went walking around and looking in Lowes today at wood to fix a door and seen one of their building kits for a cabin and kinda halfway priced the wood and it would be keeper to go that route with it then to use their kit that is the same thing.

I however dont know what goes into building a house or whatever, but Im going to be looking into it for a getaway in the summer and hunting in the winter. I figure 4k to 10k and me and my brother doing all the work expect for what someone else has to come in and do. Im however not sure on the size of it yet either.

Sounds cool.. I assume there will be no plumbing/hvac/electrical? Were you going to pour a slab, or frame up with treated? Roofing? (Might go metal) If you get snow your way stick to an 8/12 or greater roof pitch. THe roof will be your toughest task. If you get frost in the winter, Make sure to dig down 42" for you footings. Rember the foundation is the most important part of the build. One good freeze with improper footings and your cabin will come apart. Depending on how big you go, the Shell is going to be the cheepest part. Start to add in elect, then you will need a generator, and if plumbing you will need a septic......blaa,blaa,blaa/.. I would keep it simple and build a nice brick fireplace for the winter. Frame in some windows for air flow in the summer and maybe an old fire stove to cook some food on.. Oh, ya dont forget to dig a deep hole outside (down wind) for the shi##er... LOL... Good luck.

Build a square box. Lets say you go 20x20. The most labor you will have on this build is Diging the 80lft of footings. (42" Down). You might want to build it with your footings layed out like a deck footing. Dig down 42", stick some sonatubes in the ground where you need them. Then you could set 4x4's (GREEN) off your placed out footings (3' high or so) and then start to run your 2x10 rim joices from there.. This way would be the fastest and still be safe.. If you do a all brick fireplace, you will halft to dig a big footing for that, due to the weight..

Dont do a kit build.. They are there to show people a good guideline for there project's..

Someone is watching to much "holmes on Homes" LOL... I think he is looking at building this on a piece of ground he has out in the sticks.. If he did get a building permit from the county he will be paying taxes and that would (just) ruin all the fun..... what they dont no will not hurt them.. If the structure does "not" have a foundation then a permit is not needed. That's if he did pull a building permit..

Hopefully everything goes well this week and I can come for a visit on Friday/Saturday. One of my freinds should be coming and he knows construction so he may be able to help you figure out how to do it. I remember helping build a "shack" here and I believe it cost less than $2K for the whole thing.:biggrin:

Here is our little getaway spot/camp on the Ouiska Chitto creek in South Louisiana. It was burned down in 2009 and we are still rebuilding. We had to build up high because it floods. It is 16x24 and those are 6x6 treated posts sank 2 ft down with about 240lbs of cement on each. Hope it gives you some ideas for yours.:smile:

Norwest Louisiana down a dirt road on my own slice of personal heaven and the cool thing Ill be able to sit on the porch and hear the drag strip...If I looked threw a scope on my gun I could see it!

How much do you have tied up into it? Cause my place is pretty close to the red river (pretty much in my back yard close). The area I have chosen is a high spot in the bottom land pretty much on my property. It never floods though.

I'll have to check with my mother in law. She is the one paying for it and keeping track.

We have about $6500 in it right now. It has a lot more completed than what you see in the pics though. It has walls, porch, stairs and a few other things.

Looks good.... when I first read the post I went back in time to the Cabin we built in Bama, it was up off the ground just like yours. We had some great times in that place, hunting, eating, camp fires and beer.. lol. The one bad time i remember was when we ran out of propane one night in Jan 2000, is was like 25 degrees in Southern Bama, that kinda sucked. Many good times and years of stories to come for your new hunting camp... good luck
