How in the world would you torque this rod to the crank? I found this image on racing junk.

Boxed end wrench and a bolt stretch gauge. It would also help having a block that's pan rail is on the crank centerline.
 
Modular engine with removable cylinders. Could be an air cooled engine like a VW or maybe a bike engine.;)
 
is there any real stress on the rod bolts anyway?
I would say it has to be since the bolts are measured using a stretch gauge. To be honest I don't think that I have ever seen a rod break below the split on the big end.
