I just put a 3k stall in one of my TA's, and it drives nothing like the 3k stall in my GN...it was almost not noticable in normal daily driving.
Now, the 3k stall in the TA seems very inefficient, takes almost 3k rpms to even start moving....shifts at part throttle only drop the rpms by about 100 rpms..not even noticable. And 35mph cruise in 4th gear with the convertor not locked takes 2300-2400rpms...

This is ridiculous for a daily driver. Is this normal for some convertors with higher stalls?
I'm sending the convertor back to get it restalled, but should I have the builder bench test it for proper operation??
This is a Kurtz convertor and I told him it was for 99.9% daily driver and did not want it to feel much different than stock, only needed the idle speed to be looser for more vac and smoother idle and this was what I got.
The part throttle shifts used to bark the tires, now its not even noticable since the rpms do not drop but 100 rpms....
MY PTS 9x11 3k stall in the GN was perfect, this one is totally different feeling.

Well first off what RPM does the converter stall at? Have you confirmed that? You probably never had 3000 stall before? It will feel very loose and unless your into it hard you won't feel much.

Brake torquing it starts to spin the rear tires at 2300-2500rpms, but the rear brakes are very weak discs. When flashing it, it will rev up to about 4k rpms.
The normal driving is where it very loose, nothing like the 3k stall that I put in the GN which is not noticable from stock for normal around town driving..they way I expected this one to be. The car does not even try to move until its over 2k rpms.

I cruize (in my only and thusly daily driver) with about 3600-3800 stall on the T-brake... noted that the footbrake and tbrake are going to give you different stalls though.

As for driveability, the only downside is that it sounds like my engine is doing a lot of work for such little movement when i'm just putting around :) The spectators on the sidewalks and etc... think i'm doing 100 instead of the 25. But being that I was the one who opted for such a large-a$$ turbo, I don't have much of a choice and getting converters re-stalled b/c you dont think it is driveable is much worse than simply matching it to your combo and dealing with the repercussions.

My 9/11 3600 stall was that way. I'd get dirty looks from pedestrians all the time because the car made so much noise to get moving. I now have a 3500 stall Vigilante and it is much tighter in around town cruising but when I hop on it it will stall pretty high. It's hard to explain but it's a totally different feel but a similar stall.

My 3000 stall sounds like I'm driving around in 2nd gear instead of 3rd gear. But other than that it's not that bad...well MPG kinda sux but it's locked up all the time. I really need to get me a switch one of these days.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Sounds like its kinda luck of the draw as far as convertors go and stall.
From above, the Vigilante drives like stock almost at >3k stall.
My PTS 3k stall drives dam near like stock at normal part throttle but spools the GT61 great and lets me launch with 15# boost on brakes.

But this TC on my TA doesn't do squat till I'm almost at the stall speed kind of like the others that responded....
I'm going to get it tightened up to 2500, if that doesn't work then I'll send it back and let my buddies shop experiment with generics ones till it feels right I guess.

Is the Vigilante as lock-up convertor?

my 3000 LU Pats converter has 100% stock street manners. Could not tell that it was not a stocker under normal driving

I have a CK 9x11 3600 L/U. Best upgrade I have ever done.

There is absolutely no difference until it comes up on boost.

Completely streetable!

Just for the record, my conv. is a ProTorque unit...

I called pro-torque because I wanted a 3500 stall but was told there 10.5 lockup for the grand national converters only went as high as 3200 stall?
Did you buy this direct from them ?

I got my 3600 9x11 3600 LU from CK as well, but it was pretty loose right off idle. The stator was also cracked but I don't know if that affects anything. The Vigilante feels exactly as you described - like stock until I come up on boost. Plus the 9x11 quit locking under WOT when it was fairly young.

I have a Hughes 3000, and it is really tight under normal conditions. You dont even know its there really, until you step on it. I have a couple of friends who have convertors that act like what you were explaining and I hate them, sounds like they are slipping a clutch all the time

I have a 10.5" pro torque (3200 LU) and I like it allot. It really does have excellant street manners. If anything it could be a little bit looser, but then again I don't have much track time with it. When I get a downpipe I'll see how it works with my TE61.

P.S. It spools the stock turbo like crazy!! :D

Mine works like stock in my gn also till you build boost on the line or get on the gas mine works perfect. but i had a problem with mine not locking up for about a year drinking gas thinking it is the normal high performance price to pay. went to the track a buddy of mine told me my tcc wasnt locking up got up under the brake pedal fixed the switch mannnn  feels like i get better gas milage or just as good as my 96 silverado. all of this for a whole year i thought i had a non lock up for a minute . plus mines a 9inch edge 3000 racing convertor paid like $530 shipped. great convertor. i dont have a te 60 though i only have a 44.

I have a hardly used Level-10 3000 stall converter for a 350/400 trans-worked great on street - i need to go to a 3500 now-maybe we could work out some kind of trade-Matt 1-347-680-8642 LMK.
