The negative for some of us keeping jobs is that companies are getting super stingy.

I do contract aircraft maintenance for the Marine Corps and I avoided getting laid off when my company lost the contract.
The downside is that the new contract winner is basically running a sweat shop, or in my case a hypothermia shop since I work in an open hangar. No more paid vacation, no more sick days. There is a complete lack of tools or proper facilities to do the work. Even so, the site managers are on our ass every second of the day expecting repairs to get done with a couple of hammers and a screwdriver. Since my wife gets me medical coverage (she's military) I get paid well but I'm freaking MISERABLE. If I didn't have health care I would have taken a pay cut. This job used to be cool about 2 years ago. Now it sucks.

In fact, tonight I've been sending out resumes to a couple jobs that I know will probably pay less just to end the misery.

Those are some good points. Companies are really cutting back as far as benifits and pension packages. So those who have jobs are suffering as well. Just not as bad.

I use to think we were going to pull out of this in a year or two but now im thinking 4-5 years.

The real estate market is still a long way from being dreadful. All of these people getting laid off will contribute to even more homes going into foreclosures over the next year or so after peoples unemployment runs out and they still don't have jobs or the ones they have pay half of what they were making before and still can't pay the mortgage.

Interest rates lowering again. Refi's might be in the 3's soon. That's a plus. People will be able to refi and lower their monthy payments but they still need jobs that are vanishing quickly.

I bet you see large turn outs for Police and Fire jobs over the next few years. Same thing happened in the early 90's.

Hell even the police are starting to cut back big time in Pa :( Ive been trying to get into the acadmey for about 2 years but Ive been told by local police now is NOT the time to be going in.... Sh!t even the part time jobs are getting hard to find and they only pay 13-14 a hour :(

Unless you want to go work in philly.... I dont think police work is the smartest choice right now here in Pa.

:(

Sorry to hear Dave. The US is in rough shape now a days. Every time I listen to the radio its all doom and gloom with fore closures, layoffs, job cuts and bankruptcy. Might have to relocate to stay in your trade. I wish you all the best.

How much longer you think until half of america is having to rob and steal just to stay afloat?

Our company laid 15 off today. I was the lucky on. We been slow for months and this was no surprise to us at work:(

Dave-

Are you willing to move to Kansas?

Nex-Tech Online - A Rural Telephone Company

I might be able to help, my uncle is the VP.

Ty

Not really. If I have to move anywhere, I would hope to get closer to Ashville. Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Houses aren't selling, so can't sell here to move there, to take a job (which doesn't exist anyway right now). Round and round we go.

I see you are retired. Are you checking the jobs on usajobs.com?

My bro works for UPS and drives the Semi trucks (15yrs). He still has his route, but less and less packages are being shipped his way. I think were headed for the big "D" and I dont mean Divorce!

I work for UPS as well. We are seeing an increase in stops in our region. The density "Bulk" is down however. Companies are ordering less, but on-line stopping is getting bigger everyday. Good Luck to Everyone.

I left TN in 2005 because I saw this coming and moved back to TX. More job opportunities here but I still have worries about getting laid off. Start selling on evil bay some of the junk you might have accumulated over the years to make some extra scratch. I've done it before and didn't do to badly. Kinda a pain but money is money after all.
