Im sarting to realize that my mig cant do everything I need so was wondering what everybody was doing for a tig welder. Im mainly interested in making custom intercooler pipes, exhasut, battery boxes...Stuff like that. Any suggestions for a good, cost effective welder or if someone has an extra laying around:D

Usaweld.com. They have a mig, tig and stick all in one. Real nice machine.

I'd hit a local supplier and ask for a demo of several of their machines. The consumables are very important. The ability to get them in a timely manner or at all would be important to me. Also parts/service after the sale can pose a problem down the road with an off brand. If the unit is cheap enough I guess it can be disposable. Miller, Lincoln, Thermal Arc, and the like might cost more upfront but if you have probs or need service/parts in a year or ten it could be a good investment.

Whats your budget?

I like my Miller Diversion 165. You can buy them or the equivalent hobart for ~$1300. If your budget is less than that your looking at a made in china unit.

well actually as i was going to reply to this thread the ad vertisement at the bottom was for summit racing welders. Found one for $850 which is on the cheaper side but its also a summit product so their not going anywhere so hopefully they'd have good support even though I prefer jegs. My budgets not much now since the cars getting painted soon but once its painted is when ill be seriously looking

I use these & have had some good results with out busting the bank.

I have their Mig, tig, & plasma cutter
Cut 45 Plasma cutter is pretty impressive
Tig 100 weighs about 9 lbs.
Their ulti mig is rated at 200 but I think it is under rated. It seems like a lot more then 200 for what I have welded with it.

HTP stuff is good. Mine is a Thermal arc 185. going on 6 years with no issues ever. Most of the 3 way machines,MIG,TIG, stick will not do aluminum.
