I just got in from the garage, and i was inspecting the stock timing cover. the bore of the oil pump gears are really messed up. I don`t feel confident install this 120,000 mile timing cover. i see a timing cover on E-bay. But i as thing, is there a better timing cover that the stock replacement?

i also have the boost plate which look pretty good.

Front cover

I would not put that cover back on...it is probably to worn out.
Check the cam button gouge? That cover on Ebay is probably good, high volume oil pump and so forth. I am sure one of the vendors you like to buy parts has one avaliable, or at least do a compare between that and the Ebay model. When I got mine I compared it to stock and both of them appeared to be just like a "not so quality" piece of material.....I have not had any problems with it in the first 4000 miles though.

I put on a new Melling a few months ago. It was just over $100.00 new. Just be sure to inspect the oil passages. I have read that there are/were covers made with passages too small, but they could easily be drilled.

Those Gm units are not bad but i prefer the replacement covers because the crank seal can be replaced from the front instead of removing the whole cover to replace a seal. I can get a new one for you if you want for about the same price as the one on Ebay. Can be had in std or high volume, with or without new gears. You should always check all the oil passages before install as stated above, this is with GM or aftermarket. Frank:)

oil covered

Go to GM and buy a new one and port it yourself. Those high volume cover/extended gears put a strain on your cam sensor gear and camshaft. You should have 22-26# of oil pressure at idle engine hot. That is provided you have tight bearing clearences.:)

I was told there is a replacement cover with taller Oil pump gear. this cover cost somewhere around $200-$240.

"Those high volume cover/extended gears put a strain on your cam sensor gear and camshaft."
Have you personally experance this problem?. also i plan on running a roller cam from ultradyne.

No not that much for the big gears. I think they are in the low to mid 100's. Frank

gears

Hey Stevex,
No i have never used the extended gear set up, i do have a full roller set up and did not want to chance anything. I read about the problems some members have had and did not want to chance it. I run a new GM cover and have not had any issues. So long i have 65-70# at WOT is all my motor needs. Frank does have a good point about the after market covers having the ability to change the seal from the outside.

65-70 psi wow. thats great.

i value you guys opinion this is why i bounce my question around.
I will have to find out more about this extend Oil gear. the piece i am buying is a complete timing cover with a oil pump kit. i will get more info. i`ve been very busy runing back and forth from the body shop, speed shop ( 3.8 and 3800 stuff) and other business stuff.

I took some pic of what i have done today to the 109 block. I finish installing the main cap and the girdle after shot peen the block. So i spend some extra time deburring the crank case and the lifter valley.
