I am finally getting around to installing a trunk kit for the TR and wanted to know if anyone can provide a picture of how the tire jack mounts. I know it goes somewhere behind the tire, but I don't see anyway of securing it.

Additionally I am wondering where can one get the actual bolt / washer / nut to mount the tire. The tire is just sitting there and isn't fastened down and I looked and there was no bolt, no nut.

I've looked through the junkyards wih no luck.

not too little

it's more like a hook - the size of those hooks you can screw into a wood beam to hold something - so its a "U" shape with one of the "U" legs longer than the other and that longer leg is threaded. it hooks onto the trunk bed. then you have a big somewhat flat "cap" which of course is larger than the inside diameter of the wheel. this acts as a "washer" and last is a "handle" with the it's center threaded (female) to match the end of the "U" hook. I've seen both metal and plastic handles that work. put them all topgether and they will squeeze the spare nice and tight in the trunk.

should be a ton of these around in junk yards and vendors who keep this stuff

Tire Jack Placement

What about the placement of the tire jack, I don't have any examples to go by. When I purchased the car, mine was just laying in the trunk hungry for another opportunity to create more damage to the rear fender.

It's above and just behind the spare tire as soon as i get home i'll take a pic of mine for ya to refernce yourself.

1984-87 "G" SPARE WHEEL STOWAGE & JACK PARTS:

8.821 WRENCH, Wheel 14036400
8.920 NUT, Wing (M8x1.25 Type C) Two (2) Required
8.820 RETAINER, Jack Storage 14030632
7.632 BOLT, Wheel Carrier Clamp 470236
7.632 ADAPTER, Spare Whl Storage 14030631
15.222 COVER, Spare Wheel
7.633 NUT, Spa Whl Stow 14071288
8.820 JACK 14041829

In addition to the above there are two (2) "studs" that mount to the body, to which the above listed wing nuts install. I'm sure your friendly GM dealer can run these down for you.

Eleven (11) pieces in all, not including the spare wheel/tire.

Happy hunting!

If you look in that area there is a vertical brace welded to the body. There will be a hole at the top end for a stud to snap in and there will also be the same hole and stud at the bottom of that brace on the floor of the trunk. The bottom stud fits through the open end of the jack at the ratchet end and the top stud fits through one of the holes on the base pad part. The wrench slides up through the base and there is a curvey shaped bracket that the bend of the wrench fits in and the hole in that bracket fits in the lower stud. Two big wing nuts hold everything down. None of those parts are available new. They were only used on 81 to 88 G-bodies. The 78-80 used the old sytle bumper jack and wont work. The tire hold down hardware also only fits G-bodies. If you need a new jack and wrench those are pretty much universal for all RWD GM cars from 1980-1990. I found Cadillacs an excellent source for the jack as many of them have never had the jack on the ground.
