TL 4/USB adapter

I'm trying to use Turbolink v4 with my newer laptop...my old crashed and burned. I bought a USB/Serial adapter to use with my cables and so far Turbolink will only say "Unable to find hardware/check wires". My laptop is picking up the adapter as COM1, and I'm currently running WinVista 32 bit.

Is there any tricks to getting this to work? I've tried searching and haven't found much info...thanks in advance!
