I just purchased an ’86 GN. Two lives ago the car was built for racing and had a lot of performance parts put on it, including engine and transmission parts. In its most recent life, the car needed an engine and transmission rebuild. The owner did not race the car so he had the engine rebuilt with stock parts. The transmission was rebuilt with hardened parts and a stock torque converter.
I haven’t driven the car too much yet, but it has huge turbo lag compared to the GN I already have that’s mostly stock. I expected to feel a lot of lag given the setup and I want to make it go away, but still have a ‘streetable’ car.
Here is a list of the main power-related parts:
• T-E 64 Turbo (Boost gauge seems to top out at 19 psi. with current wastegate setting)
• 55 Lb. Injectors/New ECM programmed for Low Impedance Injectors
• GN1 Champion heads
• Terry Houston 3” Downpipe, no cat
• Front Mount Intercooler
• Kenne Belle Ram Air System
• Double Pumper Fuel Pump
• Engine rebuilt back to stock within last 2,000 miles
• Transmission rebuilt with hardened parts within last 2,000 miles
My plans:
• Add alcohol kit ASAP and run up to 25 psi
• Street driving only, no plans to race the car at the track
• I’m not a high speed driver, but I do like to get up to speed really quick
• Mixed driving; around town, to work occasionally which is 50 miles one-way, and odd longer trip.
Based on this info, can you recommend torque converter and stall options?
Thank a bunch.
