I'm approaching the opportunity to get an upgraded torque converter soon. However, I'm in the category of "clueless" when it comes to TCs. From what I've been reading, for a GN that is exclusively going to be street driven (maybe a street race or 2...wink wink), I should be going for a TC with about 2800 stall. Sound right? What is the factory stall??
I know alot of factors go into deciding which TC to go with. Just trying to get a general idea of where I may want to go with this.
See my sig. for upgrades.
Also should I go "lock-up" or "non lock-up"?

The factory converter stalls around 2600. I looked quite abit 2 months ago at everyone's converter. I looked at Pat's, Vigilante, PTS 9x11, Coan, Yank, and PTC. I choose the PTC from Dusty, fit what I'm doing to a "T". No pun intended:biggrin: I was in the same situation. Lots of street time, and the occasional trip to the track. I love just cruising in the car. I wanted to retain all driveability and have some more kick as well. I stayed with a lock up converter for that reason alone. I don't think you can make a bad call with any of the above mentioned converters. Everyone will have a favorite, I thinks it comes down to what you the best with. There are lots of other variables that will go into this as well. Do you lock the converter alot?? You may want to look at the Vigilante or the 9x11. Just my 02. Jason

Glad you like it:wink:

Like Jason has said. A 2800 will work well for you. If you prefer wide open throttle lock-up there is the Vigilante or 9x11. The line of 10" Lock-ups I sell like Jason has can't be locked at WOT due to the single disk but he can tell you it doesn't need it. It's still efficient unlocked. They are available in 2800 and 3200 stall. If my converter doesn't match a customer's needs I send them elsewhere.

On my GN with the PTE51 turbo I use a 9.5" Single Disk Vigilante '0' pump converter with turbo tweak chip with the proper decel fuel parameters.

It is an awesome match on a driver.

Lockup for gas mileage and in 3rd gear at the track.

24 psi. on pump gas and alky. all day every day.

A proven combo. on lots of cars, make sure the tranny is in good shape or rebuild it when you take it down for the converter swap to save some time or $$$ in the swap costs.

IMHO... if you go lock-up.... go 3200 stall. This will give you room for a (non ball bearing) 61 mm turbo.... or a BB 66 or 67 turbo.... and IMHO... won't be too loose for a 51 turbo.

a non-lock 3200 might be a little much IMHO for a 99.5% street driven car.... cause highway cruising will tend to heat the tranny fluid without it locked... at that stall...
