i have a 92 f-150 with a E4OD trans, i burnt the fwd clutches out of it 3 years ago, had a national trans company rebuild it ( BIG MISTAKE, i was in a bad way though) i got a new convertor, solenoid upgrade, mlps switch, etc. well 50k later the thing starts moving in and out of lockup, the other day i drive it, tryto pass a car, it dropped down and then slid outa geat, engine reved and the dropped back into gear, blowing something, no i hav no fwd gears with od, if i turn the od off then it works, from what i have read this trans has lots of potential , its put in the lightning, 7.3 diesel and 250-230 series, i am going to rebuild it, ( i have gm trans experiance) it will be a learning experiance, but i want to know that while it is apart if there is anything that can be done to strengthen this thing, i know that youguys have secrets that you don't want to tell, but any help you can give would be very helpful, thanks in advanced.

ps i bought the rebuild manual, just havn't recieved it yet

Here is the list of parts that i use.

If you have experiance with the 4l80-e this one should be no problem. It sounds like the od sprag {roller if it was upgraded} went out. The O/D planet is known to strip out also, but it's probably just the OD sprag that failed.

Here are the parts i would get: center support kit {upgrades the center support to a load carrying bearing, also changes the od shaft, and a orificed cup plug for the output shaft}, Bushing kit, If the trans has 2 intermediate frictions you can get the pressure plate to upgrade to 3. A awesome shift recalibration kit for these transmissions is a transgo kit pt# sk-e40d {it fixes a ton of inherent problems with this trans. The shift feel is awesome}, Bring the low\reverse clutch and direct clutch clearances to .010-.020 and the coast to .025-.045 this will help speed up the reverse engagement {another inherent problem}

Tips: 1. Replace all the bushings including the front and rear stator bushings in the pump.

2. In the intermediate clucth stack there is a pressure plate {real thick}, regular steels and a steel that is thicker than the normal steels. The intermediate stack up goes pressure plate first in the case{big thick one} then friction,steel,friction,steel,friction, then the thicker steel on top. Get this wrong= no second gear.

You can check out WWW.transonline.com and go to total tech database and check out the E4od section under the rebuilds minimum do or die section.

This should give you a good start. :D

i canot thank you enough, i forget that there are 2 or 3 sprags in this thing, and a sprag sounds like what happened, i will check out the info, i cannot thank you enough again, you made my day

You won't think i made your day when you get the parts bill. That's the thing i hate about doing the e40d's and 4l80-e and the chry 518's is the parts cost so much.

If i can be anymore help let me know.

One thing you may want to add to the parts list is a kit from superior called the code 62 kit {for the e4od of course}. This is a pump upgrade kit. It comes with a special pump bushing, a couple of cup plugs, drill bit, and an aluminum spacer. What the kit does it makes the front lube circuit independent of the converter circuit. It basiclly gives more volume to the converter circuit which it needs, especially towing.:D

i wanted to say that i pulled the trans apart today, and sure as s**t the input sprag had a catrostrophic failure, due to the fact that i knew that the trans had problems when it happened, and a second vehicle , not driving it saved the tranny, the inner and outer races need replacement, anc the coast clutch, but all else is good, thanks for the help,
