Went to see my 87 GN at the shop yesterday. Engine wise it's FINALLY all dialed in and tuned to perfection. Got razor's alchy kit installed new O2 sensor exhaust work done and a full leak down etc.

But, (and there is always a but) there are some transmission issues.

Its apparently an art carr transmission. Not sure on the # or stall etc. it was installed by the previous owner and always shifted hard as hell but at proper RPM.

No it sticks in 1st gear until about 3500 RPM and almost knocks your teeth out upon shifting. 2 to 3rd isnt as bad but still not shifting where it should. No transmission work was done too it. my mechanic noticed on his later pulls on the dyno the trouble.

Now im wondering what could it be? sticky governor? debris causing it to stick etc?

any help is appreciated.

thanks for the quick reply.

checked the tv cable and its sitting at the same position it has for years. i can tell by the wear on it. i did adjust it and it shifted a little bit earlier but there is no where else to adjust the cable its at the max. so i put it back to its original position.

Yeap, detent cable on drivers side the thottle body, or tranny's low on fuild maybe

Enjoy!

full out .about two inces with many teeth showing ?adjust it so it shows a little pull on the cable at wot ..engine off .i think if you adjust it short it self adjusts with a stab to the floor ..

Governor spring

Hard to tell unless you know what art carr built .what kind of shift kit ?is it brf, lock up ,non lock?

Im really not much help to the situation. I'll try and get into contact with the previous owner to see exactly what was built.

Drop the pan and see what it looks like in there.
Could be debris in the TV valve causing this.
If the gov spring was gone it would not upshift till real high RPM

I have adjusted it and it resets itself to the same notch at WOT...

If you're adjusting it, and it's reseting its self when going to WOT, then you're adjusting in the wrong direction. Sliding the adjuster back toward the firewall firms shifts, and if over adjusted will pull back toward throttle body somewhat when going to WOT.

Adjusting it out (sliding toward front of car) will cause shifts to be looser and sooner (lower rpm). Over adjusting in this direction will not reset when going WOT because it's already too loose.

thanks a lot for all the replies. Ill be pulling the pan this weekend, I'll make sure I report back and fill you guys in on what I see.

Thanks again everyone.
