hey guys, I've been looking for a brf CORE to rebuild for quite some time now, and I have seen many on this board but silly individuals are asking anywhere from 400 to 600 bucks for a CORE
tranny that is slipping and needs work! You've got to be kidding me!!! Does anybody know where I can buy a core trans for core money? 200 bucks AT THE MOST is all that a core is worth in my opinion. Am I out of line??

Yes your out of line.

$400 is a good deal. You can't buy them anymore and a Non BFR Tranny isnt the same.

Typical 200 core (non BRF) from a cheap salvage yard is $125.00. Then get a BRF VB from Chris at CK ($300) to put in it. So yea, $400.00 for a BRF core isn't too bad.

I buy Eric Shertz trannys not directly from Dynotech but from another vender. The value of the core there went from $600 a few years ago to $750 now. So if you were to buy a tranny without a 86-7 brf code tranny with no core add $750 to the price. And if you use an 84-5 tranny for a core add $200-$250 so the core can be made equal to an 86-7.So the prices on here for an 86-7 brf trannys isn't too outrageous.

im a little out of the loop here, but whats a brf code trans??? how can you tell If a trans is a brf or non??

Try to find a new valve body...there's your $400. Its only gonna go up as these trannies become FUBAR.

why care about a BRF?
Most of the time when they are performance rebuilt (shift kit etc..) negating any advantage to the BRF to start with...
Alittle tranny bird told me this...
Get a regular core (cheap) and have your builder do it up.

maybe you should ask this question in the tranny section and learn about the BRF..........

$600-$750 for a core?Heck you can come over my house drive around the block in my car then we'll pull it out & you can have it for $900:D

I tried the non BRF tranny when i bought this car. The owner had tranny work done and did not know the difference when they swapped them out. When i got it, it had no 2nd gear. She paid for the rebuild, shift kit the whole 9 yards. Lasted 1000 miles, 2nd rebuild lasted a day. Get a BRF, or have Bruce Toelle modify a valve body to replicate the BRF valve body. There is no other way. There is no replacement for a brf valve body besides having one made like one. Its been tried and thats why they are worth so much.

So ummm, It's not a BRF
That's my point. A regular 2004r valve body can be made into a "BRF" valve body.

why not skip the headache and expense of finding a TRUE BRF valve body and just use a normal one modified the way you want? It's what I've done and have zero complaints or problems.
Nice thing about having one built is you can also have it taylored to your own wants & needs.

Quote from my tranny guy:
"there is nothing special about the BRF valve bodies that can't be done to a normal one..."

just my .02

What is wrong with the 85 tranny, are they the same as the 87s?
If not what is the difference.

The 84-85 TR transmissions are code BQ. They are extremely similar in calibration to the BRF. The biggest difference is that the servo piston is smaller but that's easily remedied.

I have four 86-87 BRF trannies getting ready to go to Lonnie Diers to rebuild one of them. He is giving me a resonable price on the other three cores. I have one Non Brf 200r4 I'd let go for $100.

I'd say $400 is very resonable:D

As I understand, if you add a BRF servo, a .500 boost valve, and a good shift kit, they are the same. I have an '85 BQ being built right now for a full weight car that I plan to run mid tens in...
