I have a pretty much stock 87 GN 68k miles, turbo injectors IC is stock, I have alky kit ,scanmaster and a few bolt ons. My question is I live in Miss. where it can get really hot here in the summers. Would it be good to install a trans cooler or are those for the higher HP cars. Thank You Keith

I would put one in line after the rad cooler. I'm in Texas and of course it gets pretty hot here too. I run the fluid through the factory radiator cooler, then to a bar n plate then through the first tube n fin. I don't have a gauge on it but the fluid still looks good after driving it for a year.

Get one with at least 15000 btu rating if you climate is in the 80s and 90s.

It is a good idea to install a trans cooler. The factory cooler is barely enough for a stock car. With the addition of a plate and fin style cooler(LPD), it will keep trans temperature under control and prolong the life of your transmission. With a stock torque converter a 20000 GWV rating is what I sell and/or install. If the climate is extra hot as you state, a 24000 GWV rating will work fine.

the one i have is 12" * 10 " , that should be a good start

That should be fine as long as it is an LPD cooler. What brand and style cooler is it?
the cooler came from TCI transmissions in Ashland , Ms . not sure the brand , my brother is a trans builder there. I worked there summers and during college. It was only a few miles from where I grew up.

I snuck a cheap one from NAPA in between the x bracing and condenser. Don't have my temp gauage installed yet. It was about 8" x 15" x 3/4". I would have bought something fancier but it was a last minute thing as i was installing my fmic and NAPA had it in stock. Like $40

You need to use a plate and fin style cooler. There are plate stack coolers also but much more expensive. A tube and fin cooler as pictured above is not a low pressure drop (LPD) cooler. I do not recommend using a tube and fin with a 200-4R transmissions.

Dave i listen to your advice with open ears. Im thrilled with my trans i built using your kit and advise. Are you sayi,g that 3/8" tube is more of a restriction than the factory lines etc? Car had a smaller version tube and fin on it for years and never had an issue. Guess ill change it when I have to take the fmic out. But until then its staying lol.

Also the tube/fin is gonna get beat up a lot more in the grill then a bar/plate unit would.

Old one was on for years and looked fine. New one has a fmic in front of it so not really concerned with that. I never claimed this was the best cooler or anything of the sort. It was in stock at the local NAPA and $40. I was not aware there was an issue with pressure drop. I would love to hear more about how much pressure drop there is with this thing. I never considered it considering the size of the factory lines. Is it because of the bends?

Its a problem because your cooler adds over 7 feet of larger tubing that puts a huge demand on the pump. All my testing in the early nineties found using these coolers cause failures in a 200-4R in a performance application. Definitely not advised to use one especially in one of my builds. I discuss this with every customer and on many occasions have pictures sent.
