I recently purchased a 87 GN with 87k miles on it. It's bone stock including the trany and d5 converter. The car shifts hard but has a real fast knocking sound coming from underneath the vehicle. It DOES not sound like a rod. Do converters make noise when they are getting ready to go out?

BTW/ the driver side header is cracked but this sound doesn't sound like an exhaust leak.

Any suggestions?

Trans noiose

Hey D,

Could be a converter, pump, or maybe flex plate? Need the type of noise and when it happens. Closest guy to you I would recommend is Mike Kurtz at Century auto and trans. He is in Richmond. Great guy and he knows his stuff. thanks, Mark:D

Attempting to isolate the problem sometimes helps. Do this by removing the three converter-to-flexplate bolts and pushing the converter back into the transmission.

Now you can start the engine and run it without the converter, front transmission pump and input shaft turning. Is the noise still there?

How long will the tranny last this way? It shifts hard and there isn't any slippage?

How much for a good rebuild? On a limited budget! What is a good converter? On a limited budget!

Darren

D, It's hard to say how long it will last 'cause we don't know what is wrong. The header crack alone could be the source of the noise, but until it is physically checked, it's hard to tell much of anything. It will all be pure speculation. thanks, Mark:D

I predict it will last 'til it breaks... LOL!

That's a good thing ... right?!

That's an oxymoron...

A D5 and you have one...

As stated before, unless you can conclude the noise is in fact the trans, I wouldn't be planning on a rebuild from the way you say it is working. MeanBuicks gave you the easiest and quickest way to isolate the noise, you should try that first, then let us know.

But to seriously answer your ? on pure speculation, if is the pump split or t/c you truely have a ticking time bomb and it's just a matter of time, may be 2 days or 2 years but I'd bet more on the days then years.

How many Mike Kurtz are there? I just spoke to one yesterday. He owns PMAC Performance in Bellaire and is known for his Buick trannies.
