Had a noise with my 200-4r for a long time now, never hurt or seemed to effect anything. Best I can describe it is a hissing noise, like fluid being forced past something at high pressure.
Only makes noise in gear (all gears) at idle. As soon as the car starts to move it goes away. Been like this for a long time, car see's action at the strip on occasion, around 30-40 passes a year runs mid/low 12's 107-109mph.

Last time at the strip coasting down after a run in 3rd, the car started to behave like the converter was trying to lock, juddering slightly. Does this on the street now too when slowing in drive (not o/d). The really worrying bit now is when you drop it out of gear the car vibrates quite badly:eek: . Goes up and down with rpm. Select a gear and it's as smooth as you like (still hisses at me though). Haven't driven it since it did this.

Was thinking maybe the converter is shot? It's a D5 with a 2800 stall. (I think an orange stripe when I bought it about 9 years back).

Any thoughts welcomed. Sorry about the long post.

Interesting developement - got the car out to look things over, removed the converter shield checked the bolts etc. Couldn't see anything obvious.

Started the car, still got the hissing noise in gear, vibration out of gear. Vibes seem to stop around 1750 rpm.
Anyway, put it in drive and built rpms to around 1200 or so on the converter - noise started to get louder then sounded like someone threw a wrench in there somewhere!!!!!!!!! drive comes in and out quickly and roughly.

Same noise and effect whatever gear and now have very little forward drive. Bad vibration still there when out of gear idleing.

Well.......obviously hurt something bad. Would anyones money be on converter or pump?

Trans was rebuilt about 10k back, hardened stator support, 2800 stall 12" L/up converter, 10 vane pump.

Can get a converter to put in and try but don't want to get the trans out and in again if it's likely to be something else.
I'd sooner wait till my next trip to the states at the GS nats and get the parts for a rebuild. Would suck to have the car stood for that long though.

Any help welcome.

Could be the converter. I would drain the fluid & drop the pan to check for any metallic debri before you try another converter.
