trans is out, what's next?

Drained my black trans fluid and pulled the trans.
It is sitting on my work table, all I've done is clean the outside of the case.

Usually I can remember how things come apart, but there are lots of parts in one of these things; is there anything I should know before pulling it apart?

Are the manuals detailed enough to enable one who has not done a trans to get the parts togeather in the correct position? I thought I remember reading that a couple of parts should be marked so that they may be reasembled in the same position???

It's pretty straight fwd as any trans, be careful on re-assembly of how the roller brg's go there is only one correct way for each.

watch as the little ball bearings come out of the valve body.

Good luck to you! You've got more nads than I do for messing with it. 2 things that I don't mess with. trannies and rearends, everything else is fair game.

If you arent experienced with these transmissions, you are asking for a major (and expensive) headache. I am not downplaying anyones mechanical abilities, its just that its not just a matter of disassembly and reassembly. (ask me how I know!!)
Clearances have to be set, special tools are required and there are mods that these board gurus do that you wont find in a ATSG manual that are needed to make this trans live at high power levels. Granted you may get verbal help and instructions, but reading "strengthening the 200-4r" is still not the same as actual experience. I tried it and got a trans that shifted and went down the road, but developed a 2-3 flair and burned the direct clutches. To this day i still dont know what i did wrong! Good luck if you attempt it

ATSG Manual Step One

I suggest that you get an ATSG manual and read how a rebuild is done before you start. Not everything you need to know is in the manual but most of what is missing is in Bruce's http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31365

A couple of special tools are required.

Unless you have a lot more time than money, take Bruce up on his offer and send him your trannie.

I'm a damn good mechanic and the first one I rebuilt took more than a week. I had taken five apart, seen my trannie mechanic do it a couple of times and I had one 200 4R that was still in one piece to serve as a guide to how things went together.

thanks for the words of wisdom. sounds like you were well prepared for your rebuild job.
those manuals usually do not contain everything, like you said, that is why i am doing the checking here.

I do not have too much extra time on my hands, and i am not tring to become the next trans guru. i just like to learn as much as i can and the automatic trans seems to be about the single least familiar part on a car.

also, i am perpared to yank it out and do it again if necessary. since i delt with eastern performance about 5 years ago, i am accustomed to my GN sitting around

i am now going to build a stand to hold the trans.
