hi,
i had my trans rebiult about a week ago.after a few short test drives the tranny will not shift until i lift my foot off of the gas.and when it does shift it is sluggish.i have the tv cable adjusted properly.at wide open throttle it wont shift unless i lift also.
any ideas would be apreciated on what to look for.

thanks,nick

first thing I'd check is the lil spring in the governor

drop pan, four bolt cover toward the back of the tranny 13mm headed bolts. governor right on top of it

the springs are know to fly out

thanks red!if this happens will it cause the tranny not to shift into second at wide open throttle?

thanks,nick

I only had it happen once and had to get home like that...finally goofed around with rpms enought and back pedling till it shifted ..at that point I'd hit the rev limiter (6375 rpm) alot trying to get it to shift

Its easy to pull so get the work cloths on and check it out
:D

if it's not the gov spring like Red said... check the tv exhaust lifter rod in the tv bracket linkage.

turbotwister,
Does this sound like your prooblem ?
On normal take off the 1 - 2 shift does not happen until I take my foot off gas.

My second Problem is under full throttle at a manuel 6000 RPM shift. The tranny bounces off rev limiter at 6400. Moved rev limiter up and notice a 500 RPM flare upward on data log.

REMEDY ?
Mike Kurtz says governor pressure may be low at the 1-2 shift under normal driving shift.

For the flare problem he said to check a spring that may have popped at the govenor. (I think). Mike, built the tranny several years ago, and it doesn't have many runs.
Mike says I may or may not find the spring if it popped out without pulling the tranny but it would cause no problem.

Where do we get the correct replacement spring ? (I failed to ask mike )

hi,
ok , i indeed did find a spring in the pan .i took the governer out and there is no springs on the governer.i only found one spring.is there only one spring or two?i think possibly the governer is not the correct maybe becuase the biulder used a different case and might have put in the one that was in this case.how did i tell if it is a brf governer?im thinking maybe the spring was missing from the get go.would that cause a soft shift?

thanks,nick

there is only one spring on a turbo unit gov.

theres a comparison picture on gn ttype.org but Im not sure exactly where at

sounds like you have found your problem :)

The picture I saw on GN T-type shows 2 springs, 1 weak and 1 regular, for a GN govenor (?). We might get more tranny guys to chime in but I was told some people take out one of the springs out for race application. So, maybe thats why turbotwister found no springs on his govenor and Reds Hot Air says 1 spring applies.
I discussed this yesterday with Mike Kurtz but did not ask him about the govenor having 1 or 2 springs.
Either way, turbotwister may have found our problem.
Let us know.......please

no guessin..I know

Thanks,

1 spring then. Hope this will be an easy fix.

I am sure do. :(

hi,
ok,next question is what side does the spring go on?the small weight or the bigger one?ive also heard of there being some tricks to keep the spring in?any input?

thanks,nick

spring

Twister, the spring goes in the small weight side. This is the factory set up on the BR trans. The weight is not detented from the factory and this is a common occurance. We rebuild the governors with a set screw detent to maintain its position just for this very purpose. You may well install it, only to have it happen again. Let us know how it all works out for you. PTSEXTREME,
I tried to pull up a site on PTSEXTREME. Can I get an overnight delivery on a tranny govenor to Texas area ?
