I was going to take the Monte out for a cruise tonight but she wasn't having it! From recent posts some of you know I have switched from the Holley 600 to the Edelbrock 750 carb. The first 750 I tried was my buddies and I finally got one of my own. Anyway I was able to get the stock throttle bracket to work with my performer RPM intake and the Eddys throttle linkage has a spot to hook the TV cable which is very close to where the Q-jet carb has the little stub to hook the TV cable, so all that is good.

Everything was working fine the car was shifting great until tonight. It has been pretty cold up here in Jersey lately and we have had some minor snowfall so I haven't really been driving the car. So tonight I figured I would take it for a ride since the roads are finally clear and dry. I let the car warm up and pulled out my driveway and the car wouldn't shift out of 1st gear. Now the first thing I'm thinking is clogged valve body. So I continue to drive the car around and it would only shift gears when I got real deep into the throttle (3/4). I got it into 3rd and was cruising along and she still wouldn't get into OD. When I would let off the throttle it felt like the car went into neutral, the RPMs dropped to idle speed. At 1 point tonight I did get it to shift into OD and it felt fine until I stopped and tried to take the car through the gears again. I couldn't get the car to shift into OD the rest of tonight. Could the coverter be shot? Are Pro Torque converters junk? Trans fluid is right on full and has no signs of metal or weird smells. PLEASE HELP!!!!

install a pressure gage on the line pressure tap to verify line pressure rises and falls in relation to the corresponding throttle angle.if it does suspect a governor or valve body problem.at minimum throttle what rpm and mphour does it shift out of first and second?can you get a 3/2 kickdown going to wot in third gear at 30 mphour?

Where exactly can I tap into, I'm confused? I was doing about 45 and she wouldn't kick down from 3rd into 2nd. My buddy has a IROC-Z with 700 trans and he had this same thing happen to him. For about 3 days he though his trans was smoked then it started shifting fine. Im lost.

call me tomorrow after 4 and ill set you in the right direction.718 784 4256

Chris I can get it to kick down from 3rd to second at about 30-35 mph. I took the car out again last night and was able to get it into OD one more time but that was it. I have to take it it like 3500 to get it to shift gears though. Its definitely not the TV cable adjustment because I played with it a little last night to see if that would help and it didn't.

I pulled the pan and everything looks fine, and there was no spring to be found. I pulled the govenor and I have the one with the light weight and heavy weight with the spring on the light weight. Everything looks good, the gears are fine and the spring is in place. I have no idea what to do now.

Sounds like...

TV pressure may be stuck. A stuck TV valve would give you the same symptoms. Pressure gauge is next. That will tell you what is going on.

Alright thats what Chris from CK perfromance told me to do. I do not have a pressure gauge that will read from 90-200psi and will have to wait until Monday to buy one which sucks. I did carefully inspect the TV plunger when the pan was off and it is all the way out and can get pushed all the way in and it doesn't seem like its hanging up or stuck. Is there something inside the valve body related to the TV system that can get stuck that you do not see? Im thinking the car sitting for 5 days with 15 degree nights maybe caused this to happen. I would like to try and fix this myself because I don't want to drive the car 1.5 hours to Dynotech the way it is and it would really suck to have to pull the whole trans so they can unstick whatever is hung up. Irritation is starting to set in!

There is another valve behind that plunger

Actually there is a plunger then a spring, then a roll pin inside VB that holds the TV valve in. THAT is the one that sticks. You can try this: pull tv pivot and plunger and spring and try to use a pencil magnet to free the inside valve up. Also if car is still driving try this...... Get car to upshift to 2nd. Then manually downshift to low and tap throttle to floor real hard real fast and see if it unsticks. This puts fluid pressure on back side of valve "sometimes" freeing it. Does not always work especially if valve is stuck real good. If you need a pressure gauge the following link is a good one to have. Will not be the first time or the last time you will use it. Can be used for fuel pressure also. Lots of uses and durable as hell. Ck it out and they are in stock ready to go. At this time I do not know what else to tell ya but try what I have suggested.

Bruce thanks a lot for offering your time but I just got back from a 15 minute thrashing and it's finally working again. I guess something was stuck or a grain of dirt or piece of metal finally cleared out but the car is shifting fine again!! :D Thanks a lot guys have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!:D
