On the trypical trans rebuild, how many of you have had to change out the bushings and if so what did you use to pull the old bushings?

The tool I see out there for universal application is over $500 :eek: ...

I found a driver for GM 200's that will driver the bushing to the proper depth but the puller I am having an issue with.

If I find that bushing change out is rare, then maybe I won't worry about this.

Any feedback appreciated.
 
On rebuilds, I almost always change them out. H frame press and driver tool set.

Usually they don't. Take note of the depth of each bushing before you remove it. Then, put the new one in at the same depth.
 
Two more questions:
Do most driver kits allow provisions for stopping at a depth you chose, is there some sort of stop plate? Or do you have to come up with a method to stop the bushing from traveling further than the prescribed depth? The way I am imagining this tool to work is you put the bushing into the bore and then mount the tool and you use a ???? hammer ???? to drive the busing in. Or are you supposed to use a press?

Then what are you guys using to pull these bushings?
 
You can drive the bushings out with a chisel, or the bushing installer, etc, depending on where it is at.
Doing a Th400 reaction carrier I use a chisel to knock it out from the back, then I use a driver to install it.
If you ever do the bushing in the forward drum on a 200-4R or the output shaft of a Th350, those are a PITA to remove, get out the dremel.
I use an engine cam bearing remover and installer on many of the bushings in an automatic trans. It is made by Lisle but is sold by tool trucks also.

It works great because the installer portion is lined with rubber, it protects the bushings while you are installing them.

However it won't do smaller bushings like pump stator bushings, etc. You'll have to use alternative methods.

One quick trick I've used, installing the new bushings in the output shaft of a TH350 is using a 1/4 air fitting like you use on your air tools, it will fit into the bushing, grind it off so that it will go into the output shaft and place the bushing at the perfect depth. May also work on the 200-4R forward drum bushing.
 
I found a few different driver sets on ebay and was wondering if I could get by with one that only goes up to 1 3/8" like this one
or if I needed to spring for a larger one that goes up to 2" like this one
or do I need a larger set than that?

Most likely neither set will do all the bushings. Your better off finding a driver set specifically for a 200-4R.
