I just put an RJC IC on and a ta60 now the car won't shift at WOT? If I have the pedal just shy of WOT it shifts fine. Pulls great and runs hard. I don't get it? It's the 800hp California Performance Trans. aka Art Carr
Please Help? Thank You, Brent

TV cable may have slipped or needs readjusted.Double check tranny fluid level, adding alittle more may do it.Under hard accell, you know which way fluid is going.

I'd say it is a fair chance if the tranny has some miles on it... that all the new found power ... has it slipping some..... and that could be why no WOT shifts..... I had a 700 one time that shifted fine until it had lots of street miles and lots of track passes... it then didn't want to go into 3rd at WOT most of the time..... engine was around 400hp....... funny thingh is..... pulled the heads off of it...... probably 50-70 hp went with the heads..... and it shifted fine at WOT.....

Moral of the story..... at some power level for a given clutch condition..... it really might not want to shift at WOT...... You bolted on a front mount and 60 turbo....... probably an easy 100 hp there.... might be taxing the tranny..... Might not be... but it is something to consider.....

I put a ta61 on a month ago "it took one" the shaft got loose, anyways after the ta61 was put on the trans hung also. I took it in to get a rebuild and Art said everything was fine except the valvebody so they replaced it. Now here we go again with the ta60. :( also now after the "turbo, and IC" on the HWY in 4th gear if I stand on it sometimes very rare but it downshifts into 2nd insted of 3rd whats that all about? The first time that happend it scared the sh** out of me $$$$ I thought the Trans let go?

Took the car to California Peformance today. :( They checked the TV & Pulled the pan off checked for WOT pos in the trans. and that check out ok. They put a 700r4 filter on. I test drove the car and now it shifts somewhat ok but 3rd gear sucks. They want me to bring it back on Tue. They said it needs a new spring for 2nd & 3rd. I think I might be getting stroked! I just want this thing right. I've had nothing but problems from slipping, to not shifting correctly. I think maybe it's time to bite the bullet and go to Lou's guy in Las Vegas for a second New Trans.

i feel your pain brother

i'm sure you've read my tanny problems, slipping, etc. I have not rebuilt mine, but not sure if it does need one. But I dont want to get stroked either taking it to a shop. It seems they always find something too easy to be the cause of the problem, but charge an arm and a leg. Seems mine is getting worst, but I hate any mechanic shop/unless its my garage. :D unfortunately, I dont know a darn thing about trannys

I don,t know a darn thing about trannys either, but you would think after spending around 3k it would be perfect.

With the new power you added, maybe you sheared the pin holding the clutch band in the transmission. I'm no trans expert but that's exactly what happened to me. I could get off the gas and make it shift but at WOT it would not shift. Good luck! Paul

Brian Hofer is the best!
He has this trans for sale or he can custom bulid one of those BRF Trans
Street/Strip 2004R lock up trans with brake
This unit is a CZ model.
The trans has all the usual parts. 550 and 400 boost valves, pump ring kit, Alto clutches (extra throughout) and wide Red band with our shift calibration.(shift kit)
This unit is a lock up with a big servo, and transbrake. The input shaft and drum are hardened. This trans will have nice firm shifts, and shift at nearly 5500 at WOT. Perfect for a ported heads and cam car.
Biggest difference between this and the BRF is a later WOT upshift, 5200 vs 5500, and a slightly earlier third gear while cruising. (most people never notice)
This transmission is built to run into the 10`s with the right converter.
Price on this unit is $1550 + $150 shipping in the U.S. (continental 48) This price includes the core charge.
Thank you, Brian Hofer

After much delibiration and research on the boards I emailed Brian about a new tranny. I have no confidence in my local shops to build a good street worthy tranny. After a few bad experiences over the past 15 years I decided it was time to deal with someone who owns a GN, loves a GN and works strictly on GN trannys. Enter Brian.

After emailing each other back and forth for a week I sent him my phone number. He called me up on a saturday afternoon. We talked for about 45 minutes.(not only about transmissions but other issues on these cars) He had all the answers to all of my questions and said he would even tear down a built tranny on his shelf and tweak it for my combo before he shipped it to me at no extra cost! That is service.

My tranny has shipped and I should get it shortly. I will post the results as soon as I am barking second gear. If you have any doubts or hesitation about dealing with someone you have never met, please email me and I will tell you about my dealings with him. He is straight up and honest and a valuable asset to our turbo community.

It doesnt do any good to make 450HP if it cant get to the ground, so we need people like Brian.

Just had to update now that I ahve about 150 miles on the tranny. It will bark second gear with my et streets(not a misprint) I did not think that was possible but it does it. Its like I have a brand new car...

You also mentioned that it sometimes downshifts into secound when you floor it in fourth. I,m sick of hearing about people throwing thousands at these transmissions. Everyone says there trans will work. The guy buys several transmissions till he gets one that shifts right after spending thousands. He doesn't learn the cause of his problem and neither do we. If these guys truely know how these transmissions work, they could easily diagnose your problem. My theory is that most don't. My other theory is that some do know and won't tell. In either case, shame on them. This problem is the easiest one to solve on these transmissions. You gave two very specific clues. It won't shift at W.O.T. but will at slightly less. It will downshift from fourth to secound when you floor it. There is one thing that causes these two symtoms. There is too much pressure in the T.V.circuit.The T.V. limit valve's job is to control the amount of pressure here. You need to install a spring of lesser pressure in with the T.V. linit valve. This will cure your problem. I've accumilated Many different springs over the years from experimenting. I use a simple kitchen scale to measure different spring pressures. I press them against the scale to a predetermined height and read the scale. In your case I would find or modify a spring that pushes down on the scale with 2 or 3 less ounces of pressure
at that predetermined height.

Thank's guy's

Thank's guy's for all your input. I'm taking the car into Art Carr AKA California Performance tomorrow morning. They said they'll fix it for free. We will see about this  . I'll keep you all posted. Thank's Brent

It's easy to put a checkball in the wrong hole. That can cause the downshift when you expect an upshift. Don't ask me how I learned that

Cost me a new set of valvesprings cuz I floated the piss out of mine when that happened.

Jim

Got the Car Back!!!

Just picked my car up from California Performance Trans . It ran great there I had enough Alky for two passes. So I get home fill it up, take off down the street and............................................... .................................................. ..............STILL FUC#ED UP!!!!
It won't down shift going 15mph it just locks up the converter, and slips in 3rd gear  I asked them what they did they said we put a new valve body in, and adjusted the tv cable.

The valve body in the GN/T is a special BRF coded valve body. I've never heard of one needing "replacing." It's a hunk of solid metal. I'd get the valve body back from the shop asap.

Why don't you save yourself the headache and take it to las vegas trans in vegas. Len is excellent with the trans and if you drive it out he will R&R it for you. quit fukn around with these local idiots who claim to know our cars and transmissions  before you wind up with a 200r4 out of a 4dr cutlass with a shift kit and really have issues when you hit the power and see your trans behind the car in the road.

Smoked

I purchased a tranny from California performance and it worked great. I've had two passengers in the car and smoked the tires all through second and barked them in third and chirped going into OD.
I had one from The Art Carr Company and it was DOA. slipped wouldn't shift right spit out fluid every now and then.
Needless to say I think even though I own one the 200R4 is not a hp tranny and it seems rebuilds are hit and miss.
Funny the factory produced thousands of these with untrained production workers and most of them worked.

That's what I found out!!! I was getting my work done by Tim Lee back in 99. My Trans went out I sent it to Tim he subbed it to The Toy Shop in Pomona and they stole my GN Trans then put a shift kit in a caddy 200r4 back in 1999. Thats what Art Carr told me anyway. He said that with all there goodies it wouldn't matter. So here I am screwed again. I have been back and forth to Cal Performance 4x I'm Done! I have about 5k in the trans since I've owned the car in 97 and it doesn't work. This Fri Apr 21st I'm driving up to LV. It's time for Len Freeman. More $$$$ Sh!t I can buy a beeter 87GN for what I have in this trans
