A set of worn clutches and band tends to turn fluid black and make it smell funny. Probably time for an overhaul. be sure to flush the lines and cooler.

What do you recommend I flush them with?

I know guys who use air conditioner system flush. I just blew out the lines with compressed air and ran some new fluid through it when I put the last one in mine.

If the fluid is black and smells bad I recommend a rebuild. This can cause the trans not to shift. I would also get the converter freshened and updated if needed. You can flush the coolers with Trans Flush.

David

The fluid is black because when the clutches and or band get smoked, the trans fluid gets hot and gets burnt, hence the nasty smell and dark color. The fluid gets broken down and can no longer do its job. Like david said the unit and converter should be done at the same time because the fluid has been thru the whole system, and especially if converter is a lockup because its a clutch also.Be careful what flush you use because some of it uses water in it and that is no good for a trans,i personally use the lubeguard brand as its always worked good for me,and my shop uses a lot of flush because we build a lot of units for the everday drivers not just the hot rods. By the way flush the system both directions to get all the trash out of system youll need at least two cans flush until it comes out clear.

I was told that the servo spring may have broken.Im going to drop the pan and check.Would you have the torque specs for he servo?

I don't know who told you that but even if the band didn't apply [because srvo wouldn't work] the trans would still shift, it would just slip. Also wouldn't smoke fluid. Also spring doesn't apply the band fluid pressure does. Pull pan,bet their is tons of trash.

Dude, it's fucked. I know it's not what you want to hear but it's the truth. If you don't want to accept it you can try to chase the specific issue down, but even if you find something at this point, the rest of it is toast. Burnt fluid = burnt clutches = burnt up trans. It needs a rebuild. At this point you should be typing out the combo/power level and asking what it takes to make the fresh trans hold up to the combo.

Sorry to be so blunt

You guys are right...I pulled the pan off the trans fluid felt like sandpaper with all of the burnt clutch pieces. Im sending it off for a rebuild.....

Doesn't surprise me,just make sure you flush cooler out real good. I recommend a couple of cans of lubeguard kooler flush run the kooler or that trash will end back in your unit, and that's not good.

  • I had a shop check out my trans and he said the bands were melted in all gears and it was trashed. I was told that I need a core for this rebuild. What parts should I tell him to reuse ? I want to make sure this guys isn't trying use regular 2004R parts. Any advice will be helpful.

You car appears to be an '86, if true and has the OEM trans, it is a BRF. DO NOT TURN IT IN FOR A CORE. And, do NOT get a 'regular' rebuild to replace whatever is in your car.

You need to get with someone that knows TB transmissions and have them rebuild the OEM one to re-install. Run from any 'regular' trans shop.

OK, I yelled enough (sorry), just wanted to get my point across. These cars are very different from anything else out there.

X2 on get your brf parts back and find a tr trans guy. If you don't believe us, do a search on the forum for the sad stories the local "race trans" builder did to a 2004r.

I find that super to believe do youhave a picture of the trash that was in the pan I would like to also see pictures of gearsets, planetary gears and ring gears. Also exactly what did this thing do when it very first started acting up. A little info goes a long way, hate seeing guys get ripped off. if the gearsets got melted or a bearing came apart and got between planet and ring gear you would have heard all kinds of noise sometimes the vehicle wont even move like a rear end blew up, either way you would have known it especially if your a car guy.post some pics or a little more info please.

X3 absolutely do NOT let the OE trans be replaced with a core. Get your shit back and run!

minimum parts you MUST get back:

Valve body/plate
governor
servo/springs
front and rear planets
case with tag.

if they threw away a bunch of trashed parts they can be replaced or have a donor core to donate ONLY what is broken in the geartrain.
This ain't a standard core and it IS worth replacing an unusually high number of hard parts.

This story repeats itself over and over and over on here and people never learn. Local guy will virtually never get it right.
