I just bought a 1987 Grand National. The transmission shifts very hard on all shifts, and before it shifts the rpm's go up very high, sometimes I have to let go of the gas and step on it again so the transmission will shift. The person that I bought it from said the transmission was just rebuild a couple of months ago and that a shift kit was installed. is this normal?

No it's not normal. Sounds like your tv cable is not adjusted right. That would be my first guess. Is your fluid level good? The TV Cable regulates the line pressure in your transmission for shifting purposes etc.

Follow instructions on step 4 and figure 3 below in the link below. If you don't know what you are doing then get someone that is qualified to make or check the adjustment. It's very simple to adjust as long as you know what you are doing. :)
