trouble codes 93 taurus

Is it possible to check trouble codes on a 93 Taurus without a scan tool or code reader. Thanks

I checked them on my Dad's 93 Crown Vic. It's a wacky procedure. Do a search on the 'net. I had to ground a connector under the hood and at some point turn the steering wheel to complete the diagnostic cycle. Really weird stuff....
