OK, first things first, I just got the car running again tonight after a two month wait for the rebuilt trans. I had a local shop go through the trans with new clutches (blue plates), bands (kevlar), t.v. boost valve, super servo, 10 vaine(?) pump, some hard parts and the rest of the usual stuff and a 9" Art Carr N/L converter. I just got back from the first test drive and I am not very happy! The problems are as follows in no certain order:

1. The trans doesn't shift from 1-2 with enough umph (no wheel chirp or solid feel) it is a decent shift but not even as hard as the same trans did before the rebuild.

2. The trans fluid is foaming, I used shell dexron III fluid from Advance Auto. I have no idea what could be causing this??

3. I don't know if this is trans related or not but now the car is making a strange whinning noise, I don't know if maybe this is the pump, TC, or really what it is. Any help would help with this problem.

I admit that I know next to nothing about any transmission no matter what vehicle that it may be in so any help with these problems would be appreciated.

Thanks

All points to a pump problem. Whine is usually air or pressure buzz and /or can be at times a converter bearing going south.
The airation (foaming) is one of the best clues here. Are you sure fluid level is up to full? Also we have seen filters that were cracked at the neck , react just like this. Also if filter seal is leaking can cause this. Pump clearence problem could react like this. FIRST thing you do is install pressure gauges. Find out EXACTLY what it is doing. Go from there.

Trans noise

Brady, you DID check the crank end play when you completed bolting the tranny up, right??? If not and the converter was initially not into the pump correctly..

He's actually referring to the converter freeplay. When properly engaged and fully seated back in the transmission, the converter mounting pads should have a gap to the flywheel of 1/8"-3/16".

If you have no clearance, either the converter is not properly engaged in the transmission or it was built too long.

If your clearance is greater than 3/16", the converter hub can jump out of the pump rotor and get on top of it. Either way, these situations will wipe out the transmission pump in short order.

A question for Greg.

If the distance between the torque converter and flexiplate is more than 3/16" what should be done?

Referring to Clay's ?...

I'd like to hear the detailed fix on this as well. Do you add or subtract mounting pads or what?

Thanks in advance for the lesson.:)

Whoa Nellie!

You can't just throw washers in there because you may, in fact, wind up preventing the converter pilot from engaging in the crankshaft pilot bore. That's what keeps everything centered.

If the converter is too short, it should be replaced or repaired.

Here's a converter dimension chart for reference.

sorry guys

I guess I didn`t mean you could throw a pile of washers in there. I kinda spaced the pillot thing , if you have a minor clearance prob a flat washer or 2 would be OK ;) ???? The learning curve is kinda jagged at 47 yrs old. BTW did I mention I live in the sticks?:D

Jim

PS thanks Greg for no flames.
