Just like the title says... my turbo went to crap  and don't know what it is. Yesterday it had a very bad sound (like a police siren) max boost was about 10lbs (it is set for 15lbs) and struggling. Check all the vacuum lines and they are good to go. I'm taking the turbo out tomorrow and hopefully I can find what it. So, here is a list of questions...

1. If it's bad, should I rebuild or buy new? (I'm incline in buying new),
2. With the current setup (read sig below) can I go bigger or stay with same?,
3. If I keep the old one and decide to rebuild, even if I buy a new one, what kind of mods do I need to go with twins?

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, this might be difficult.

The siren sound was probably the compressor wheel halting itself against the housing, or the turbine doing the same in it's housing.

The problem with the compressor side it it is aluminum, it probably waller'ed out some material and now tolerance will never be the same. The turbine is cast iron, so not so bad of an issue. It could also be a warped shaft.

I would go ahead and replace with the same or go for a newer version.

How fast are you looking to go? How new was the turbo that crapped out?

Twins are a whole other bag of bolts. ESP and a couple of guys on this board have used twin stockers and made serious power. Do a search on that.

That sig should yield you a pretty good slip, what are you looking to do in the long run?

Yeah, I know it could have been the bearing in the CH.
That sound I have heard more than once, and it was different each time.

I took the turbo off this morning and here is the little devil that cause the whole thing to crap!! I have no idea how did it happened. I can't find any evidence nor signs of rupture hose. I guess I know what to do now... :frown: Now that I took the turbo off, is this a TA60? I'm new to turbos and was wondering if I'm reading it correct... If so, I need to update my sig.

Turbo

Considering a replacement turbo New will cost you over $850, you might want to consider a rebuild. I just rebuilt my TE-44 that had the same issues dicussed, which turned out to be a touched down of the blade. I had the entire center section replaced (brand new), the only thing used is the housing. it cost me $425.

You can contact Mike's Turbo in MI. They are a local shop and garrett distributor. The same rebuild from precison was $625.

Of course, if you want to go faster, and don't mind lag, or would put
a stall converter in, you can go bigger too.

Your fuel system looks up to par...

Toasted Turbo

It's been awhile but had a turbo go south like that. The compressor wheel was chewed up bad worse then yours. Had to clean out IC because it was full of scrapnel and you don't want that gettin in the engine.
