Well now that i have the car back from the tranny shop. My turbo won't spool.

This is what happened last night driving home from work i get on it and the boost gets up to about 15lbs. All of a sudden i here this loud whirring noise like someone grinding in a windtunnel. So i get off the gas and the sound goes away. Well since i tend to be stupid i punched it again. Well it made the sound for about two seconds and then nothing. Now my turbo won't spool.

Wastegate is good no check engine lights, Intake side of the appears fine although when i took my intake pipe off and tried to turn the blades by hand they were stuck and i finally got them to break lose and spin freely but still not spool.

I am at a loss here guys the engine has 4kmiles on it the turbo is a Garrett TA49 same 4k miles. Transmission is freshly rebuilt. I hope that was enuff info to help diagnos the problem if not tell me what you need to know.

Sounds like the turbo took a dump if the blades were "stuck"

There is zero shaft play on the intake side. Could that hapen and the exhaust side be dead? If so how can i tell. I am new to this whole turbo thing only had the car a year and barely put 800 miles on it.

If your turbo was siezed it's probably cooked. You could check to make sure oil is getting to it by unhooking the oil supply line, unplugging the ecm, and cranking the engine until you have oil pressure. Also, when you broke the turbine free did you check to see what kind of play you had in it? Up/down or in/out? Either way, it sounds like you're gonna need a new turbo. Do the oil check regardless to ensure that you don't end up putting a new one on and cooking that one too. HTH. james

Sounds just like what happened to mine when pieces of a spark plug went through the turbine housing. Chewed up the turbine blades pretty good. Had to replace CHRA

Ok well i got the turbo off. There is oil in the exhaust side of it, but here is the funny thing. Everyone said the turbo is shot, but all of the turbine blades are ok.

There is absolutely zero shaft play. Would a bad seal cause the turbo not to boost at all?

I am contemplating a new turbo but do not want to order one if this turbo is salvalgeable. Also it was not starved for oil as was suggested may have caused the problem.

Just to give as much info as possible. There was alot of oil buildup around the oil return area. This is a Ta49 with 4k miles on it why did the seal go out so quickly?

I had one freeze up on me after blowing a headgaket and water ran through it .
