Well, Im finally forced to upgrade my turbo.
Over the weekend I had the car out and I made a couple of full throttle hits. Well the last one took out the turbo. I have a stock turbo , was running about 26 psi on alky.....well I got on it and it felt really strong, however when I let off I usually get that silly turbo fart noise, It was only a very silent hiss and then smoke was pooring out the tail pipes..... I limped home and everytime I put any kind of load on the engine it sounded like a really really bad power steering pump noise.
Well I got home and pulled off the inlet hose to the turbo and looked inside and all the fins were really chewed up... HERES THE STRANGE THING... for all the turbo experts....I stuck my finger in the inlet and there was a nut "it was loose" surely that nut does not hold the center section together does it?????

Is this a common problem with stock turbos.....
also I know alot of people say blow off valves are not needed on turbo buicks..... Im not sure if 26 psi is consided high or not on these cars..... but with this kind of boost I wonder if it could have kept my turbo from destroying itself.. I does seem that it was the letting off the took it out.....
Any advise is welcome and what do you all think about a ta49 as a replacement......
this car was a solid high 12 on alky @107

A TA-49 is a good replacement. I know a few guys using them and they seem to be happy. Yes there is a nut that holds the compressor wheel on the shaft. Also are the fins just bent or are there pieces missing? I hope they didn't get sucked into your engine.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the turbo shaft is inertia welded onto the turbine. Basically they spin something (the shaft or turbine wheel) and jam the things together, kinda like fusing them together. The nut just holds the compressor on.

For the extra $100 go for the TA-49 if you are like me and don't want to go ape on your car.

thanks

thanks for the reply
the fins inside the turbo were just bent up pretty bad on the outside... I have not looked on the exhaust side yet....
looks like ta-49 time...well... hopefully it will make the car run a little better.... : )

At the boost levels you are running it'll make the car run a LOT better...You're gonna thank that stocker for coming apart!!

call B&E customs and get a John Craig turbo from them. I got mine in about a week and the price was sweet! Good guy to deal with.

Thanks man!! Glad you were satisfied with the service!

I went with a TE44, just a tad bigger than the TA49, and still works with the D5. Of course, I just bougth a 2800 L/U to make it better.............:D

The 44 and the 49 both use the same wheels, the compressor housing is where the difference is.

49 stock inlet, 44 is not stock.

The should make about the same power.
