Turbo side to side play - is this acceptable or should I rebuild?

Took my turbo off today to replace the header to turbine gasket that was blown. Checked side to side play and got this..........does it need rebuilt? I have to admit I ain't no pro on knowing much on shaft play. The compressor has no play at all and the turbine just had side to side, no in and out play

That's way too much play.

You'd need to get the actual bearing clearance by using a dial indicator through the oil return. You lift both ends of the shaft at once. Levering the shaft at the end won't give you any useful clearance data

I understand what you are saying. I see people always posting talking about shaft play, I thought it was a way to verify for a rebuild. Sounds like I was wrong.

oh yeah forgot to ask, what is the upper end of clearance before saying a rebuild is needed?
