Is there a turbo out there that is comparible to a ta-49, is dual ball bearing, and will work with a stock torque converter? Thanks for any feedback.

Yes there is.
The closest dual ball bearing turbo to a TA-49 would be a PT3431RLE. I don't believe they ever sold a ball bearing version of a TA-49. However, that PT3431RLE would be the closest thing as they share the same turbine wheel and the compressor wheel would be very close. Here's the specs.

TA-49 rated to realistically support 540-545 fwhp when maxed out.
TA-49 comp wheel 44mm diameter, 2.290" inducer, 2.950" exducer, 60 trim.
TA-49 turbine wheel T31 Stage 3, 2.559" inducer, 2.228" exducer, 76 trim.

PT3431RLE rated to realistically support the same at 540-545 fwhp.
PT3431RLE comp wheel 56mm diameter, 2.230" inducer, 2.950" exducer, 57 trim.
PT3431RLE turbine wheel T31 Stage 3, 2.559" inducer, 2.228" exducer, 76 trim.

Now, if you were looking for a stock appearing dual ball bearing turbo, PTE could probably build a TA-60R as the wheels are identical and their TA compressor cover should bolt up. Pretty much any dual ball bearing turbo that features the Stage 3 T31 turbine wheel can be spooled up by the stock torque converter. Hence the PT6131RLE has been so popular. It just depends on what your goals are. Don't forget that all Garrett dual ball bearing turbos are oil and water cooled, meaning you will need the water coolant line kit. Not too fear as PTE has a Buick specific water coolant line kit.

That is some great info there Patrick, THANK YOU!! The TA-60R you described is something i have had on my mind & wondered if it was possible. Do these water cooled ball bearing turbo's clear the stock heat sheild? The stock look is VERY important to me.

I would say yes, but only if you run either a braided -4 oil feed line or the PTE oil filtration system. Here's why. As some of you might know, I recently installed a PT6031RLE on my T. I run the factory oil system so I opted for the pre-bent OEM replacement oil feed line that PTE makes. Fitment is very tight and unfortunately, the way the tube is bent at the top causes the line to stick up higher than the factory setup. This also causes the heat shield not to push down all the way in order to get the bolts aligned properly on the question mark bracket. :( Sigh... The fix would be to run a braided line with a 45* - 90* fitting attached so that the feed will sit low enough to clear the heat shield.
In these 2 pictures you can kinda see what I'm referring too.

See how the feed line sticks above the question mark bracket? The heat shield won't bolt up. Not only that, but the backside of your heat shield will need to be notched to clear the water lines. Now I am in the process of replacing this line with a replacement -4 feed line with the correct adapter fittings and I will post pics later this weekend of before and after so Stay Tuned.
:D

Thanks for all the info & pic's Patrick. Please keep me posted with the oil line situation & i'm going to inquire with PTE today if building this turbo is possible. What kind of HP gains do you think i will find over a well tuned TA49 combo.?

There is an honest 20-25hp gain going from a TA-49 to a TA-60. (545 - 570) If they can do a DBB version, you're gonna love the spool up. The TA-60 will be much more happier at 26psi I can assure you. :) And 60ft times will certainly drop with the quicker spoolup.
Anytime I can help let me know. I'll post up after we change the oil feed over, it's gonna be pretty trick.

Patrick

Thanks

Thanks for all the info guys. I also was told of a GT6315 turbo that seems similar. Know anything about it?

PTE can build a TA-60 Ball bearing, stock apperance turbo for $1,199.00. Looks like my Garrett housing TA-49 is going up for sale.

Dustin27987,
I've never heard of a GT6315. I don't think it's ever been listed on any website including Garrett's site. Now there is such a thing as a GT6152, which is a PT6152 turbo.
More info please.

The GT6131 can be had in BB which is awesome and works with the stock converter

Does a non bb 6131 work with a stock converter ?
My searches seems to point to a 2800-3000 stall..

RUQWKNF seems to indicate you may have a different opinion in one of the other threads...

It has the same exhaust wheel as the TA49 and the TE44. There are plenty of people running these turbos with the stock D5...... use an RJC style boost controller for quick spoolup. It should be fine IMHO

On my street car I have a 6131 Non BB with the stock converter (bone stock motor to the valve springs) and for me it is perfect. I can light the tires at will. BUT, I have a a PTE stock location intercooler, 2 3/4" exhaust, 3" downpipe and no Mass air (T-Pro). All these things help spool up. A car with a stock intercooler and downpipe likely would be a bit lazy.
Hope this answers the question.

What are your thoughts with my 'breathing' setup..

Big Mouth Air
LT1 MAF Sensor
Big Neck Stock IC
Steve Monroe Ported TB/Plenum
THDP/No Cat
Hooker Catback EXhaust..

Also have the wg solenoid bypassed with a manual boost control with ceramic ball...

Also, does the 6131 use a stock Style WG actuator and does the turbo shield fit...
