Ok guys kinda f#%^* myself here and now in a delimna I don't know what to do need good help advice I had my old stalk about 90% out and the connector broke off at the wires I was able to pull the connector out cuz I had a hanger hooked to it to fish it back through so now I have no stalk wire or hanger going down the steering column I have the steering wheel removed and still can't get a clear view as to how the hell I'm going to feed the new stalk through !! I don't know what to do I knew I was going to regret this I give props to those who can feed it through in half an hr without disassembling anything ..... What can I do now ? Thanx

I'm going to assume you're talking about the cruise switch wire. you can't properly feed the wire through the column without at least removing the steering wheel, lock plate & turn signal switch.

Read the threads below ur "turn signal stalk replacement" s it would give u an idea n help u with the installation good luck !!!

I had the same problem took the steering wheel off and was fishing the wire through and the end connector broke off. Most people will tell you that you can just use a coat hanger or something and it will go right thru. I did not have such an easy time. I recommend pulling the column out and doing it in your garage/ basement where you comfortable nothing quite sucks as much as bending under the dash and working on this. I took the column out and ran the new Cruise control wire torward the bottom on the column 6 o'clock position. I first slid a long screw driver in to find some daylight then fished a thick clothes hanger through and pinched the wire closed on it and pulled it through. It felt like it was going to break off again but it went through. You have to fish it through where the column tilts and once you get it that far you can fish it the rest of the way. I'll be doing this soon on my Ttype but have done this on my GN and it SUCKS!!

Removing the steering column will be my last resort if I can't do it any other way .... I have read al the threads on this procedure lol and it gave me the confidence to finally do it but with my luck that damn connector broke off the turn signal lever wire .... The steering wheel is off now there's a round metal plate with slots in it about every 1/4 is that the lock plate? How do I remove the lock plate ?

Here's another thing with that plate assuming it's the lock plate I was able to feed a 1/16 diameter wire through the column and have it come out the bottom of the column but it doesn't come out on the same side it originally went in the wire tends to poke out on the rigt side of the column does that matter? Is there anything inside these steering columns that would pinch or crush the wire ? Are they hollow inside?

You'll need a lock plate compressor (some parts stores sell these for less than $20.00) but if you managed to snake a wire thru the column, as long as the wire goes thru the plastic protective sleeve that the rest of the wires go through then your ok. BTW if the wire is not in the sleeve, the sleeve WILL slide out & you can position the wire properly. If the wire is not positioned properly & you use your tilt a lot, the wire may break & your cruise will not work.

I used mechanics wire. Did the entire stalk change out in less than an hour. Sure hope you are able to get it fed back through.

Thanx for that tip ..... The bassist to this is I can't see any kind of sleeve I can't tell if my hanger is going through the sleeve where all the other wires are at when I pulled out the hanger to pull out the connector that broke a plastic about 10-12 inches came out as well it has a slit all the way down the middle where the old stalk wire sat in is that the sleeve u r referring too? That white plastic sleeve rested on the left side of the column and I can't get the wire to feed to that side I goes to the rigt side of the column I guess I'll just have to mess with it tomorrow somemore I might look into gettin that lock plate compressor I've never seen or used one before

Ok taking a break now before I beat the lights out of this car !!! I managed to fish a wire through but there is no way that damn connector will make it through the other wires and 90 degree turn in the column so I borrowed a lock plate remover and I can't get the damn snap ring off fml!! I kept compressing the tool and it doesn't seem to go past the snap ring to remove it .... My question is how much can I turn and compress the lock plate to get past the snap ring to be able to pick it out? Do I just compress tight enough where I still have to force the ring out of it's groove?

Sorry, the sleeve I was talking about is toward the bottom of the column where the wires come out. As far as the lock plate depressor you should be able to tighten the nut to press the plate down about between 1/16 to 1/8 inch. using two small bladed flat screwdrivers (screwdriver & one 45 degree seal pick would be a little easier) you basically have to work/edge & expand that retaining clip out of its groove & slide it up the steering shaft. once the plate is off, you'll see that 90 degree turn you spoke of.

Mission accomplished guys!!! After such a simple yet frustrating task I still have my car intact personally I think the best way for any firsttimer attacking this task is to just remove the steering whee, lock plate, and the turn signal canceling cam it just makes fishing the old wire and new wire so much easier ..... Much props to those of you who can just fish it through without removing anything I found that to be nearly impossible .... Anyway jut want to thank you all you who helped me through this with ur advice tips suggestions and experience.... Oh and my brand new turn signal talk looks pretty !!!
