I currently have and rjc 3" downpipe. I have been thinking about going to an external gate but instead of trying a gn1 or getting a custom one done can I just turn mine into one? If so how? Piping size to gate matter?

Depends on where you put the wastegate ... if its on the header its simple .. if you want to mount the wastegate integral on the down pipe then you need to redo much of the down pipe.

depending on the turbo you are using ... some have a provision for the wastegate on the turbine housing .. then its easy...

just depends on what your starting with ... I use a flange setup that makes it pretty easy to make a external gate downpipe ...

Nice pipe.. haven't really looked at an external gate pipe in a while. I see the difference now...looks to be more work than I though. Thx for input

it depends on how you do it... if you put the wastegate on the turbine housing or on the header or xover pipe then the downpipe changesa are minimal to a internally gated one... simple 5 minute fix to get that resolved... but if you want to mount like on the pipe I showed.. then its a clean start from scratch

The time when they built my down pipe I didn't have this turbo. I had a 6266 CEA turbo

My T-netics looks just like the one on your car and with the massive D/P I thought you were running at least a 66.

Nice setup! I love the D/P.

Yeah the funny thing is ... would you have ever thought a 4" downpipe would actually cost you power ? ... who would have thought such a thing !

The 4" pipe will never cost you power, the way the gate is run back into the downpipe will.

Hey Mike, if I just block off the puck/ seal it to the turbo or lock it shut so to speak and run an external gate off the header[I have that provision] and dump to atmosphere will that hurt performance in any way???

Or do I need too seal the hole in the turbo and go with a dedicated D/P and the W/G plumbed into the D/P???

gate to the atmosphere is the best for performance but makes noise. If you can seal the puck by locking it against the turbo it will be fine. It may be better to put a plate between them but as long as it seals your good

Thanks Mike, I thought that would be fine, just haven't read it anywhere. I have made a rod that fits the original gate and welded it to the old gate bracket and when I tighten the bracket down it pulls the puck tight against the turbo.

I was going to make a plate but this way was quicker and cheaper for the same result. I will clean it up in the future, just wanted to see how it would work and if it was the best solution.

Are you trying to tell me that the gate will make more noise than me??? That suckers going to be one loud MOFO!! LOL!!

rob that will work great and when the gate opens you will know it mine points straight down at the ground

Mike,

Bet ya a beer it can :) back to back dyno pulls.. going from a 3.5" to a 4" PULLED POWER ! especially on a non vband housing
